Car Tax - grace period?

Is there still a sort of "grace period" of a week or so in which to replace your car tax? Mine expired at the end of last month, and I was undecided whether to just take it to a scrappy for disposal (i.e. stick on ebay for 99p) or keep it running - well I've now got no choice and need it - only to get the car tax I need to drive it 5 miles down the road in it to the post office...

that's the irony, that's exactly what I want to do, only I have to drive the car to do so
