Insurance costs maybe? OC7 is a mere whippersnapper I believe....
Witness Caterham's promotion of the car/insurance/driver training offer at the Motorshow.
What was the offer at the Motorshow? Does it include an agreed buyback?...if it's on CC's finance terms, is the balloon payment at the end of the lease unfeasibly large for a car of this spec?...If it is, that's a good way of hooking you into another car - which you may like of course....
You could try Dave Spragg at MSM 01279 870535 for insurance too.
i am actually not taking their finance, but someone elses. the interest rate with the package was 9.2%. Since had talks and got it down to 6.5%. The insurance and driver I am paying for is £650. (through Caterham) I'm 21, one (business) no claims, and the car will be garaged. Seems reasonable. The offer is 12K per year or 12 months of ownership.

thanks for that Jc. Several items on there not having myself. IE. carbon wings, black pack, metallic painting, heater. All of which I am doing myself. also building myself. so thats where i loose out on the free insurance. I quote:
"free insurance is only applicable to those who buy the super sprint as a complete package"
Obviously building myself, so cannot take advantage of this...

Has a quick scan down the Caterhams for sale on PH and am a bit confused by the various models - leaving aside the R range and the bike engined cars, how does the K series compare to the VVC? And what about a Supersport? The union-jacked VVC looks nice but aren't the rear lights in the wrong place?
Supersport is applied to either a 1.6 or 1.8 K-Series and gives a boost of 20 bhp. This means a 1.6 gets 135 bhp and 1.8 140 bhp after a Supersport upgrade. The upgrade consists of new cams and a different ECU that allows a few more revs.
Caterham now do Supersport R which upgrades the engine if it is a 1.6 to a 1.8 with throttle bodies, new ECU etc. and gives you 160 bhp.

Ruby - not quite as I recall it. The car in question was well priced at the time, but I always noted that the 5spd is not a good box in the K. The roundels and red wings were also interesting
Anyway, we digress...
The chap has made his call and, as Mungo said, any 7 is better than no 7
Please just be very aware of resale values of the car though, as this can seriously impact the overall cost of ownership. The days when Caterham's assertions of the solid residuals on their cars were true are long gone, and spec is absolutely critical in being able to sell the car without getting buggered.
Money's still pretty cheap at the moment and having a pocket full of notes can get you a serious amount of car for your money at present. But if you really wanted to buid one yourself...
For info, the best place for you to try for insurance, and he should always be on anyone's list to give a try, is www.msminsurance.co.uk (no connection other than a happy cutomer for quite a few years etc)..
The particularly young might not be best by him (but try anyway) and there are certain conditions on his cover that can be a pain (e.g. no track day cover), but it amazed me how cheap he was.
The driver training day, whilst good with a reputable firm, probably isn't adding a huge amount of value to the bottom line...
Enjoy the car.

VHPD = very high power derivative = 190bhp of pure horn of an engine.
Great motors.
Just looked at those finance figures again. Feck me car companies get it large.
Tried one bank, i.e. not even shopped around, and for 590 quid less than the cost of the Caterham deal you could borrow 25k from a bank! The 590 quid would likely pay for your insurance and driver training, and the 25k drops you into serious new car territory. A self build SL will definitely be worth more than 10k in 3yrs.
The down side is that the monthly payments are the best part of 800 quid. But (and it's a big but), there's no 10k final payment. I'm far from convinced the car they have spec'd there wil be worth 10k in 3yrs mind...

Don't worry too much about power slowing you down - the limiting step in virtually every Caterham is the driver. Get the nicest car you can afford with whatever engine/gearbox combo and then learn how to drive it better. a well driven 1.4 will blow the wings off a badly driven more powerful car.
Any K series with the standard 5spd is a mistake. But leave the lad alone and let him enjoy the car. It'll still be quick enough round corners to make non-7 people cack their pants.
Yup to your last question. They might have a completely alien system for mobile phones here, but even the public bogs have 10mbps broadband!
The good thing about that is that when Virgin sort the UK end out, I'll have full video conferencing facilities with home. I'll even be able to watch British telly if I get her to point the iSight at it![](http://www.pistonheads.com/include/images/smile.gif)

You can improve the 5 speed box by having a new gearset fitted. Search Blatchat for BGH and you'll find details of a small company whot will fit close ratio gears to the 5 speed (taller 1st, slightly taller 2nd and 3rd, same 4th and a shorter 5th).
As has already been said - it's a Caterham and you'll love it. It seems strange that Caterham don't alter the gear set on the 5 speed as standard, especially as Caterham USA offer BGH gearboxes as a standard fit.
