Jaker - I suggest Yokoham A021R as a very good all round tyre. It is basically a race wet but works very well on the road in wet and dry conditions. You should get 6000 miles or more out of them but if you do a dry track day they will get trashed very quickly.
A048Rs only start with 4mm of tread and a couple of trackdays will quickly see a lot of that removed. They certainly haven't lasted me anywhere near as well as my previous sets of 21s but they are an excellent track day tyre. I have switched to CR500s now for other reasons so will see how they work out. First track day in 2 weeks so will see what they are like. The consensus seems to be that, on track, CR500s are better than A048s in the wet but A048s are marginally better in the dry. As mentioned above the new CR500s have been constructed with stiffer sidewalls to reduce overheating. The CR500 is IMO a better road tyre than the A048 - it tramlines much less and the weight difference is very noticable. The car handles much better on bumpy roads with CR500s.

I found that CR500s grain eventually on track but are surprisingly competent and predictable. ACB10s are excellent though on track but terrible on the road. FWIW AO21s chunk but do still offer good grip even when hot...and Michelin Pileups give you as much oversteer as you could ever want!

I don't change the ears, several teams have told me that the difference is negligible between CR500s and ACB10s re the ears.

Just bought another car and it comes with a set of slicks too - I've never tried slicks - I understand they're a quantum leap even over ACB10s?

The step between road tyres and just legal sticky Formula-Rs/ACB10s is bigger then the next step to slicks, IMHO. Still - has to be done at some point!

I have tried a few and without a doubt - IMHO the way to go is Slicks in the dry and A021 in the wet. Slicks are miles better in the dry than any treaded uber road tyre I have tried (including A032, A048, CR500, ACB10).. plus if you buy used ones are cheap as chips... and if you get Michelin radial slicks you don't need to worry about the ears. The A021 are great in the wet, nice and progressive and very confidence inspiring. Great on the road too in almost all conditions.
Don't go too wide on the slicks particularly at the rear as it spoils the handling balance.. and also run the slicks at slightly higer pressure than normal tyres (I use 17 psi for A021 and 21psi for 7" slicks, all on 13 x 7" rims)
Works for me!

Avon also do some radial slicks suitable for Caterhams. Don't know too much about them myself because I don't run slicks but they are developed for Caterham so probably suitable. I have tried Avon race wets once and they were astonishing!

Lizard old boy, apologies for not replying sooner - work is getting in the way at the moment! rearrange these characters to guess the car "500R" . Also bought a 1 owner 2.3-16 for a bit of fun too - so car count stands at 5...

I recognise those gloves and the car - Andy Walsh driving Russell Savory's development RST-V8 on the North Weald sprint course. I've driven that sprint course - it's bloody bumpy...and I've had a ride in that car too - truly awesome, but with an engine costing the thick end of £18,000 it's a bit beyond my budget....besides, Russell's other toy is even better

Manual 2.3 natch.

Oh and business isn't that good - but it always helps when you get a nice redundancy cheque and then walk straight into another job

Feel free to call in at any time mate...but I am now working in London

They need to put the RST-V8 in a CSR chassis, much better traction to help exploit all that power!

anyone tried Kumho tyres on a Caterham? They seem to do the right sizes and my local dealer does Kumho tyres for not much £££...

Bound to be designed for a heavier car, so likely to be a fair bit heavier than the Avons. Because tyres are rotational and unsprung mass it is more critical that they are lighter!

well going off the website, the slicks are designed for f3 I think and the road legal track ones are for Beemers and tvr Tasmins... Not sure how that would effect them...
