David,

I've sent you an e-mail with a spreadsheet/ list of who I spoke to for insurance. (2004, 1.6 k series, 23 year old, only car, with commuting, 7000 miles annual mileage).

I ended up going with MCE but as Nathan says Sureterm were also very competitive for me as were Osbourne and Sons and also MSM.

If anyone else wants a copy of this please let me know.

Cheers

Stuart

As an owner of a live axled 1700 xflow, much as I like it, with your budget and it being your only car I'd try to (and I think you should be able to) get the following:

K series 1.4 or 1.6. I have no experience of Vauxhalls but Xflows are thirsty - 20mpg-ish - and as an only car this is expensive and time consuming - lots of time filling it up with a 150-200 mile range. They are also noisy. When I got mine with an old can on it, it was putting out 106db. Nothing too powerful given concerns about insurance.
De-dion rear axle. Bigger boot and better road manners. There are more secondhand spares kicking around for de-dion cars too, ford pcd wheels, rollbars, LSDs etc.
Adjustable leather seats - easy clean
High vis full weather equipment
FIA roll bar
Cycle wings

There is a big difference between what's available at £8k and £12k - and there does appear to be a few bargains due to the economic climate. Good luck.

hmmm two pages and no-one has mentioned an LSD!?

I'd suggest one - most people i know who dont have one want one...enables easy donuts and allegedly better drive out of corners....

I got my first car about 3 years ago and i think you have made the right choice going for a dedion k - there are a lot about so all gremlins are known about and if you want to upgrade the engine there are fairly standard parts....

5 or 6 speed - 5 speed is probably better for touring, i believe the 5th gear is actually taller than 6th in the 6 speed box so you can cruise on motorways with slightly less revs...BUT 6 speed is much more fun and better for fast road/track.

unfortunately for owners a good time to go shopping at the moment, so keep your eye on PH and blatchat
