I'm still learning all this but isn't that like 60 odd bhp/tonne?
Thing is my 20 year old Discovery only has 10bhp more (when new...) and weighs more than Saturn around 2100kg hehe

That Astra must be a ROCKETSHIP in comparison!
If it is anything like the previous hire car special Ashtray, that 100bhp or so is somewhat like my weight being 13 stone (or so rolleyesbiggrin - if or so is 20%+ the wrong way). I remember the ones I had being hatefully difficult to pedal with an engine that just wanted to move towards the light.
That might be expected from a Landie diesel, less so from a family car.
Just been browsing Carfolio and the 1986 Astra I learned to drive in was only 865kg eek That's barely more than an Elise.

It did only develop 59bhp, although at 68bhp/ton it's actually slightly better than the new car!

0a, you obviously can't construct a reasonable argument.

hehe I can kind of accept it (sort of) in a Disco, but in a modern hatchback which already seems to suffer from cack-all room/usuable space? Somet wrong there frown

I found the 1.4 Turbo Astra felt much slower than it actually was, the 1.6 turbo was much the same.

There was a time not too long ago where as 150 and (as near as makes no difference) 190bhp medium sized hatchback was considered quick, and ones endowed with a turbo would be considered bonkers. Now weight, technology, safety features, big wheels and better tyres, and increased bulk of cars makes that kind of power feel very ordinary.

Ford Cosworths and 1st Gen Imprezas with 220ish BHP were considered to be very fast cars and were given 4wd to help them cope, now you can buy a diesel saloon with more power, and a fwd hot hatch that out of the box has more power and with a few £100 spent on electro-trickery can have pushing 300bhp or what was once supercar levels of power.

Added to all of this lots of people now have no idea how to make a petrol engine with modest power work for them as they have become so accustomed to how easily accessible the performance of a modern TDI lump is that they instantly deride any car as too slow.

The 1.4 turbo isn't too bad - especially compared with the N/A....

This has confirmed my impression of the one I had on hire last week. Saw the paperwork with SRI on it and thought it might have a bit getup and go but ended being amazed how many circumstances there were where my speed would be 50+(sometimes 70+!) and I would need to change down just to maintain a constant speed. Strangely I quite liked the rest of car, defintely a big step up from previous Astras although the steering is still pretty dull.

It must be terrible. My missus has a 57reg 1.8 astra, and that has just enough power, I can imagine less being irritating.

The 1.8 Zafira I curerently had was slower than smoke off ste when I first got it, now it seems to have loosened up a bit and will sit at 0.9 leptons without too much trouble, aside from the noise. It also drinks fuel no matter what speed it does. I am hoping the rental company take the damn thing away soon...

If thats the correct weight then it has less bhp/ton than my 923kg 61bhp toaster.

That's astonishing. My 130i weighs 1375kg, with leather, a 3 litre engine and RWD.
