Its all academic now... won the auction on ebay. Total of £187 delivered in 3 days with a choice of game (i chose twisted metal). Not disapointed at the price as i'd rather pay a few quid more and get a game rather than a dodgy dvd !

So is this rumour about the japanese screens being made by sharp (hence better quality) true ?
Also i heard that the UK psp's will come with version 2.0 software which removes an exploit about running emulators ? I'm hoping to have some old school gaming along side my movies

Not sure on the screens as I've yet to see a non-Japanese version. But it could be true (the rumour was they couldn't get the volume of screens for export, so they changed it).
Any which way, they're a quality piece of kit (had one since December. Was in Japan on release) - have just put Star Wars IV-VI on a 1Gb memory stick. Top banana.
I actually have a couple of brand new, boxed Japanese units going spare (brand new with Ridge Racer) if anyone's interested (PM me).

Lol if you had posted earlier i would have taken on eoff you rather than mess about importing !! Still need to get a 1 or 2gb stick for it though.
Was doing some dvd rips last night in preparation but the file sizes were a tad big @ 700 odd meg for minority report. I want a decent quality but lowest possible file size. Currently testing 29 fps with 768k stereo sound.

You have to be careful ripping movies. What software are you using?
Don't mess with the frame rate much as you'll get lip synch issues.
Bit rates - 300 works fine for pretty much everything. You'll get a few artefacts here and there, but nothing that spoils the movie. 500 erradicates them, but increases files sizes.
I can *just* squeeze Star Wars IV, V and VI on a 1Gb stick (trimming out the credits and deleting everything else on the stick).
PS Frame rate I use is 29.97, sound around 32kbps.

I'm using an all in one app (instead of downloading shedloads of mini apps) DVX to actually rip the DVD to avi format as i want them full size to watch on the pc and potentially move to a another pc which will be a movie pc in the front room. DVX works well and is pretty foolproof once you have downloaded the correct dll's from within the plugin manager (VERY EASY TO DO !) The rips are pretty damn great also - still getting to grips with optimizing and cropping the avi's though !
Once i have ripped the dvd to avi, i'm using that PSP Video 9 software to rip a psp copy of the big version, seems to work ok, but there are a fair few options when converting to mp4.
I'm a picky bastid when it comes to sound and picture quality so i dont fancy artifacts and a muffled sound. I might try dropping the pic quality but keeping the sound at at least 128/192k (same as my mp3's)

Give one a whirl on the lower settings - they're really very watchable (not as if you're using the PSP for audio/videophile type watching after all!).
And at the end of the day, it's surely better to be able to watch it all at *slightly* worse quality than not watch at all as it won't fit on a memory stick...

The psp was the way to go because i can do films, and mp3's and also game but the price was a shedload cheaper than an iRiver movie player.
These memoery sticks better get bigger though !! hehe

I also only jumped at one when I heard they could do movies (was in Japan, got one a few days after they were released - very fortuitously as supplies were short at first).
2Gb memory stick duos are on the way. I'll give it 12mths before 4Gb are out.
But how much better would the PSP have been is they'd used a compact flash slot? I might even have sold my iPod!

Sony would get a lot more sales and respect if it took its head out of its arse. I'll never, ever, but anything other than gaming products from them in future. And they're not something I buy that regularly.
