Medieval 2: Total War
Discussion
Came across the invalid CD key problem myself.
We discovered the CD-Key is Case Sensitive! Whoever came up with that idea, I'm not sure about, but some genius. Anyway, search your registry for the Medieval 2 CD key, manually capitalise it. It only occurs once in the registry.
Start the game again, and you should be able to log on fine.
Some people advise uninstalling the game, but this is not necessary.
[Edit]You're right about the sieges. Much more challenging, even on normal level. The AI is much more aggressive and bettererer.er.

Superb game yet again from CA, Looks gorgeous, and plays even better than Rome:TW.
After hearing the pre-release spec recommendations,I was going to upgrade my Radeon 9800 Pro Athlon XP 2600 system mainly for MTW 2,but it runs perfectly well on medium/high settings at 1024x768,at pretty much the same framerates as RTW

Yep,it pleasantly surprised me too, I was expecting a slideshow.
I've got most settings at medium but with unit detail at highest, and buildings at high. Reflections on and bloom off (though having it on makes no difference to framerates, just looks a bit more....blurry) This is with Shader 2.0 selected.
Having shadows on is the real f/r killer on my computer. Though I'm not ars*d about them anyway.

I had mine slow down on the town seiges when I was viewing from the town with the town in the screen and the battle, when I moved away from the town ie town out of shot but the battle raging it was fine.
Also my computer hangs on loading if the disk is left in it.
*** Thanks for the CD key advice. Could you post how I search for the key in the registry (where is that?) **
Really enjoying it. In the Rome seiges on towns you could flood the defences and take the walls and use the tower arrow defences but this time My men got whipped on the walls, and half my towers/rams 2 of each got burnt! and I had to run away! unthinkable before.
Not sure on the pope angle, as England he is not keen on me attaking the French, so excomunication has been besowed on me a couple of times. Didnt make much difference so far. But only a about 6 hrs into a campaign.

Make sure the game is not running.
Press the windows key-r (or press start button and select 'run')
Type 'Regedit' (without quotes)
**be careful in the registry. You can screw your machine. Before doing anything, if you are not familiar with it, once the regedit window opens, go to 'File' then 'Backup registry' and save it somewhere safe. Now you can easily restore if you knacker it.**
Go to 'Edit' then 'Find'
In the search box, type 'Medieval' and press enter.
It will find the right place, and on the right hand side of the screen, you should see some values, the CD key is in plain text.
Double click on the value and change the letters for capitalised versions.
Close down regedit and play the game and try and log on. It should work this time.
It certainly is worth upgrading for - I've got everything turned up on 'pretty' at 1280 and it looks gorgeous. The battlefield looks amazing.

thank you.
I will have a tinker this weekend.
The battles are very good, like the blood being spattered. The cav charges seem a bit tame though - they sort of slowdown/stop when 1 or 2 have hit the target with the rest hanging back.
Look forward to aiming an arrow or four hundred in your direction!
(although immerced in Silent Hunter 3 at the mo as well)

Yep, we (as in a bunch of people I know who play the game) think it's a bug in the cavalry. There's so much broken in the game it's a little bit frustrating. They were going to release a patch when the game came out, but I think it's due in 2-3 weeks.

The seem to have changed the cavalry charges slightly from Rome. If you double click in Medieval 2 to get them running from being static, they go into a canter and then onto a full gallop.
In R:TW they would just go straight in to a full gallop. Imo its important to leave some room in M2 to give them time to get up to speed, before charging.
I've found that if you try charging from short distances in Medieval 2,they dont always have enough speed, and can get bogged down easier.(bit more realistic imho)
I'm loving M:TW2, it makes all the other war strategy games seem a bit lame in comparison.

yes - agree. The overall game is great. Had the whole series from shogun upto this and love them all, with this M2 being the pinicle so far. Not played it as much as i would like yet (or the wife will allow).
Be great to have a 4 way multi battle with other P heads.
Hi
Trying to regedit
found 2 x medieval 2 on the left (presume one is the demo) but on the right of both there is no sign of a key code
they both have in the right box:
ab (default) Reg_SZ (value not set)
name reg_SZ Medieval2.exe
usesmapper reg_binary 00 00 00 00
clicking onto them does not do anything. Am I a thicky?

There's blood splatter?
Looks like I'll be upgrading from my mighty Athlon 2400, 512MB RAM, and Radeon 9600 pro then
