Always been a day one adopter, but I'm struggling this time to see anything in the launch line up that excites me (same goes for PS5).

What absolute gem have I missed?

A gem is only a personal preference.
Just wait till the games come out that you like.
You dont have to have everything first.

Agreed. And I've never been a day one buyer just to say I own them. I've always been excited by at least 1 or 2 launch titles or features. It feels like I'm missing something this time around because I see very little reason to upgrade to either the new Xbox or PS5.

Sony are doing their best to generate hype for first party exclusives but only Demon's Souls Remake and Horizon Zero Dawn 2 really interest me.

And for all the hype, Demon's Souls is just a remake of an old PS3 game; Redone to more modern graphics standards - something that should have been done long ago on the PS4 IMO. Great to be able to play it again with the modern visuals and presumably the MP servers back, but a sequel/prequel would have been more interesting.

I still have a ton of unfinished/unplayed stuff on my PS4 Pro - much of it 'digital' so no resale value for it if I was going to sell the Pro to move to a new generation. Plus, apparently, backwards compatibility on PS5 is not guaranteed for everything so I would have to keep the Pro anyway for access to all my old library.

I might as well buy into an Series S for a mere 21 quid a month, instantly gain access to a large Xbox library (and a library for my PC too, something which is a massive bonus for me) and access to some good future stuff. The box is so small that it'd be easy to add to my setup without adding too much clutter. My TVs are 1080p and I won't be changing them until they break (or someone comes up with a really good 4k OLED at a sensible price) so no worries about the lower res. I suspect that the upscaled visuals will be surprisingly good on 4K sets anyway to the extent where many gamers won't care ... especially since it can do HDR.

I think MS may have hit on a good strategy here - time will tell. Sony seem to be taking it for granted that they can push everyone from their PS4 base onto an expensive new platform.

Sony thrashed Microsoft on console sales for the PS4/One, I think they assume those that bought a PS4 will just suck it up and buy the new PS5 no matter what. Problem being Microsoft have stolen a march on Sony by revealing pricing and monthly payment plans.

I think the PS5 will be revealed and there will be a big price difference between the Series X and PS5. Big enough to make some who have a PS4 consider if they will 'upgrade' or go to Xbox.

I think the monthly pricing thing will be the winner - you'd hope Sony are planning to match that.

Are we also going to see resellers offering promotional deals & rates - so the official £28 for an X might actually end up being £24 from Game or someone.

I play Xbox a lot more than PlayStation. I'll probably wait on PS5, I'm happy with my original shape PS4 for now. The Xbox looks a lot more backwards compatible too with the disc and digital games I've got for my current day one XB1.

I skipped the current console generation as it was the same as before with higher resolutions. I also couldn't stand how every game seems to take about 45 minutes of installing / patching / creating identities / tutorials / open world walking before you actually DO anything. I will get into the upcoming gen through. Hopefully the SSD (shorter load times) and Miscrosoft's move to a "Netflix" model will make games easier to jump in and out of.

Despite Sony having the better IPs, I actually think a better experience is what we have been missing out on.

I am curious, do you think with current climate (COVID) we will see the digital consoles cheaper than console with disc, so we can download from the house, rather than having to go out and buy a game?

Who goes out to buy a game it’s Amazon game or another online and it’s delivered.

But yes games consoles is a great way to play with mates and family you otherwise couldn’t with covid.

I think supply is the issue though - I’m in for the Xbox series x and pre order as soon as it allows on the 22/9 with the monthly deal.

It’s possible that Black Friday might come with options of lower price however I’d not be banking on that.

The digital games on the series X will be great too
Such a steal -

Actually think the new model will finally kill off stores like "Game" just like blockbuster died when Netflix etc came along

Exactly.
For the developers - digital games are great zero product cost (I mean case disc printed cover instruction book plus the Labour and machine costs and then logistics costs) digital only creating copies of it is in essence free or as near to free as you can get.

Massive upside for developers.

The advantage for MS and Sony is that they also have a complete monopoly over their storefront, which is why it's still cheaper to buy a new game physically than digitally most of the time.

Game are expanding/moving from consoles and game discs in store to the Belong gaming rooms. They've got PCs, consoles and VR setup to go in and play, open to anyone, and they do the e-sports multiplayer tournament stuff. https://www.belong.gg/ .

They are expanding these to more stores, they probably know themselves that online sales are going to cut down their store sales, so they are doing something.

You can’t share a physical game though. Every digital game I buy covers 2 people.

Do Forza allow say 20 + players to join 1 game?

I remember Toca on the original Xbox I had went online and you could have big numbers playing. A lot of fun and as you all remember Toca was such a great game.
