Nah don't agree at all with any of you. I played all gt's to death. I caned the 5hit out of them. 1000 cars is just not enough variety

Gt2 on the ps2 had over 1000 cars - that handled and performed differently to each other .... nearly 15 years ago.

This is the PS3 we're talking about so no doubt the graphics would be better anyway... Variety is key and it doesnt cut it. It should have every car on Pistonheads at least ... racing modifications (there were hundreds of these on gt1 and 2 ... based on real cars) are not included either.

Even the smoke trails are 5hit and no better then gt3 ... I was expecting you could leave skid marks on the road at least and burnout smoke in the for about 30 secs or so not even that.

I wouldnt call it a failure but like the title questions was it worth the wait ? No it wasnt. Ruashed and lacking.
Agreed, car choice is poor. I'd have been happy with 300 premiums and no standards though. We don't need 150+ Nissans.

Smoke is much better, it drifts around and is affected by lighting (including volumetric lighting I think).

Skid marks are in, not sure why you think they aren't... ?!

The only graphical thing I really don't like is the lack of shiny road surface when it's raining. I think only SS7 has this effect.

It does have frustrations but the actual driving is faultless. We had some really good close online racing last night, great fun.

I'm thinking about getting a PS3 and GT5 but have a few basic questions (I know less than fk all about computers/consoles/internet....)

Can I buy the game and race on the Nürburgring straight away (all I did on GT4 was 2 player races on the 'ring in Arcade mode)? No, you have to either race in A-Spec or do some of the license challenges to unlock the Nurburgring in Arcade Mode.

Is there a 2 player split screen mode like GT4? Yes, there is split screen two playersmile

Is it worth getting a headset so I can chat while racing online? I've never played any online games before but whenever I see it on TV they are wearing a headset and chatting while playing - is that the done thing? You don't have to, but if it's anything like the XBox (I haven't got a PS3 headset), it is good fun chatting to friends whilst playing ...

Is it necessary to get anything other than the cheapest 160GB PS3? I bought the 160GB model for GT5 - More than adequate!
Thanks everyone for all for the replies thumbup

Is it obvious what I'd need to to to unlock the 'ring or is it a case of doing a load of licences/A-Spec races and eventually striking lucky?

Is there a Sony headset that will just work with the PS3? (I tried looking on the Sony website but couldn't see anything on there).

Cheers

To unlock the 'ring you have to complete the first two AMG 'ring challenges (300SL then SLS).

You need to do the AMG "special" events. The begineer of these unlocks very early (or is already unlocked?). Get gold in the begineer and you unlock the ring. If you can't get gold here then once the intermediate opens you only need to get up to bronze in that one (assuming you have at least bronze in the begineer) to unlock the ring both in normal and 4 hour layout.

The AMG special events are basically time trials. In each one there are 5 challenges. The first 4 are each over a different segment of the ring, the last one is a complete lap. Silvers at least should be pretty simple

Yamauchi on GT5’s Mechanical Damage, Updates, & More

So would seem, like so many games these days, the initial release isn't the end product. Updates and fixes coming.

You narrow minded bellend
It appears there are people who like computer games and those who don't. I personally prefer to go out and do stuff but for those who like to sit in front of a TV playing car games, good for you.

Make your mind up....BTW both GT2 and GT3 had far less than 1000 cars - more like 650 for GT2 and 180 for GT3 so either way you're talking out of your arse.silly

Agree that the pitiful lack of cars that can be racing mod'ed is disappointing, but you're way off the mark with regards to smoke and skid marks - the tyre smoke is in a different league to previous GT's and better than most (although when seen behind the car has rough edges around the car), and the skid marks are correct and present.

Have you actually played this?

Funny things pixels are they, they don't weigh anything.

Not one of those cars looks like it weighs even a gram, such time and effort and such a basic thing missed.

Having worked my way through all the previous GT editions (more than 98% of GT4 completed) im now in the situation of being married with a child (he’s so sweet, 3 months old!), so don’t really have quite so much time to unlock it

Quite frustrated that the monetary reward is so low for the races compared to the cost of the cars and bits, got a real dog at the mo, bad purchase, was kinda forced on me by the limited used selection at the time. I needed a guide on what you win for which race so I could have plotted my purchases like I did in GT4, im in a bit of a dead end at the moment with little funds and don’t want to re race the early rounds.

I bought GT5 from amazon and was sent two bonus stealth cars via an email code to use in the playstation store, a 787B and F1GTR which I used for one early series. Hmm maybe I can sell one, enter the code and get another! I doubt it??? Or just flog it and use the funds to progress, that’s if I can sell the bonus cars?

I appreciate it’s in the later stages once I’ve got a decent garage that the fun (at least for me) is there, basically trying to improve my ring times as I tweak cars, but that seems a long way off and I don’t know if ill make it

Initially I was quite underwelmed, thought the sound, menu, and AI would be better, I don’t know, just thought the whole feel would be better. It doesn’t feel ‘that’ much different from GT4 at the moment which was released so long ago.

Im only level 10 at the moment, early days, I will persist and report back once I’ve got somewhere!

Alex

P.S. Did the optional 8GB, 20 minute download onto my hard drive from the get go. It still takes about 30 seconds for a race to load, it doesn’t sound that long but imo it is. I guess the PS4 will be solid state only with a board to match and eliminate this...? Swapping the PS3 HDD for a SSD doesn't improve it noticeably.

Try doing some of the special events, some of them pay very well. Also doing the license tests will win you some useful cars to use in the races.

Thanks Rob, haven't tried the specials, i will this weekend! Done the first 3 or is it 4 licenses, i'd like to do them all straight away, but as you know you can't, kinda the reverse of the other GT's, now you need to race to do the licenses!

Not quite figured out the point of the licenses other than to win cars although they do help to learn the optimum lines for some of the tracks. The special events are quite fun but often frustrating (Top Gear for example). Once you unlock the advanced karting you win 119,000 credits for a gold so I splashed out and bought myself a 458 with the winnings.

That's a sweet ride! That's what it's about, building the garage! This reminded me of GT: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2111089.htm
like the one on the game! http://www.albico.net/page14.html

That's almost the exact car I bought the other night. It was grey but I was going to paint it orange from my Murcielago but instead went for bright yellow.

Don't know whether you've played the previous GT versions but the aim of the licenses in the past was to train you in varying cars and situations so you learn the handling.

Yup played them all in the past but the licenses were also needed in order to take part in the races in the past. Now you need to be a certain level in order to do a certain race so the licenses are now a bit like the driving missions in the past.

So for someone who has neither PS3 nor XBox360, what is the consensus:-

1) Get PS3 and GT5 and wait for the 'upgrades' to improve the game?
2) Get an XBox E3 and Forza 3? (pending any Forza 4 release which will probably be better still)
3) Stick with the PS2 and GT3 as (ignoring the graphics) the gameplay is just as good?

If it helps, I'm not a hardcore gamer and won't have the time to spend unlocking licenses all over the place - this will be an occasional 'unwind' bit of fun for me...

I'm quite enjoying the game itself but I've got to take exception with yet another review going on about superb the graphics are.

They might be ok for a console but they're pretty poor next to a PC game at high res. The anti-aliasing in GT5 is almost non-existent at times.
