After much adjustment my BM/MM hunter is doing really well with DPS, so i'll stop complaining. I do like the idea of having an extra bag slot in the new patch though... Woot!
Had an old guildie re-join in the last week who's BM.Cleared VoA, OS and Naxx Spider Wing last night. His DPS was 2750 over all the raids.
Interestingly our other BM hunter and MM hunter were way up on their usual scores too.
Our 10-man group was putting out 11.5k DPS average and ~15k on Bosses. Three healers made it a cake walk.
Full Naxx clear on the cars over the next few weeks and a tie-in with another guild for some 25-man action.
We (Hunters) have had a slight buff this week:

* Kindred Spirits (Beast Mastery): This talent now grants 20% pet damage at max rank.
* Serpent's Swiftness (Beast Mastery): This talent now grants 20% pet attack speed at max rank.
Although I have to say, I can't see much difference. If anything I seem to be hitting for less for some reason. Maybe it is because I am doing more heroic level 80 instances and in VoA I didn't have the right buffs. Hmm. I am definitely considering playing around with my BM spec, and might possibly go over to Survival spec.* Serpent's Swiftness (Beast Mastery): This talent now grants 20% pet attack speed at max rank.
Been running a lot of heroic instances lately with some friends...
My Prot War tank.
Resto Shammy - chain heal spam for the win.
Holy Priest (my wife so we're happy to carry her poor-ish dps).
Ret Pally - infinite mana +3k dps!
Random other DPS - usually one of the many hunters/DKs in the guild.
It's awesome just how much you can cover in a few hours of playing with a great group. We even did UP heroic the hard way on Saturday. The Pally was in silly mode and ran the whole instance wearing just a festival dress wielding a bunch of flowers in his off-hand.
I think I've becom instance-phobic for pugs though and won't take my tank in them - same with my OH healing. My Ret Pally has been a tad busy though - DPS in pugs isn't too stressful!

Our resident rogue, Morthax, was only present for part of last night's Naxx... dps wasn't too shabby so chin up guys...

Hi, another WoW noob.
Been playing a week or so, L16 Human Warrior and just started a Blood Elf Paladin.
Any tips/advice greatly appreciated.
dont ignore class quests, and be prepared to suffer much abuse if you are a paladin who is only interested in performing a damage dealing role Been playing a week or so, L16 Human Warrior and just started a Blood Elf Paladin.

Make sure you finish the ghostlands quests on your paladin, the blue cloak and weapon you get will last a while

Don't really need one to be honest, just get installed (and patched) and start playing. The starting areas are designed to ease you in gently. Do have a read of each class before you start playing though so you can decide what you'd enjoy most although you're not limited to one character.
Been playing for four years now. Undead shadow priest on Bronze Dragonflight.
Lord Pikey, there's a pretty good beginner's guide on the WoW website:
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/info/basics/guide.htm...
The will walk you through the early decisions you make in the game, from your character's race and class, to deciding what type of server you want to play on.
There's also a newcomer's section on the forums, always worth a read
http://forums.wow-europe.com/board.html?forumId=11...
The early levels of the game act as a tutorial, giving you a chance to get the hang of things. You'll also see hints and tips appear as you play to highlight different features.
Wading into a thread with a lot of Level 80 players can get very confusing, but most of the stuff they are talking about won't apply to you for another while.
I've been playing for about 8 months now, and there are still loads of things I haven't tried in the game yet, but I'll get araound to it eventually...
Once you've covered the basics, if you still have questions, don't be afraid to ask other players in the game (and on here) if you're stuck, the game is pretty freakin' huge, so there's lots to learn!

Definately unwrap and have a go.
As a new player you'll face quite a learning curve but the guides mentioned will help out a lot. Don't bother with the printed documentation, it's mostly out of date!
WoW is a huge time-eater though - I run a small guild of ~80 people and the game takes a lot of time but it's free time and I enjoy it do it'd no biggie.
I think the game's actually getting better with each patch but it's quite firmly aimed at higher level players - the old starting zones are quite quiet these days with almost everyone being in the zones launched with Wrath of the Lich King.

It is worth getting a 10-day trial anyway. Although I have to say you won't be getting into the good stuff (i.e. endgame raids) in that time. I would choose a dwarf hunter as a first character. Once you get your pet at level 10, levelling is faster than most other specs. Equipment repair bills are lower too.
If you want a busy start area, just choose one of the low population servers that have just started up. I have just started a new character on a newish server and have found that selecting mining as a profession is generating a good amount of cash. I'm getting 1.5 Gold from a stack of 20 copper ore, which is approximately twice the amount of cash I have generated from quests and mob kills at this stage. That allows me to buy much better equipment at the auction house and level faster.
Whatever character you decide to level, Google for the appropriate 'levelling spec'. That will tell you what talents to select. My first character was a human paladin and his talents were a total mess, resulting in a much slower and more frustrating game for me.
