Re my diving board...

Apart from gravel and sand (which fall unless there's a block directly underneath) the blocks are something civil engineers can only dream of - they'll even float in the air if you mine away their neighbours, although you need a cantilever of some kind to get them there in the first place.

If you stand right on the edge of a block you can see the vertical face of it, just about. That's how I built the staircase; add a block to the edge, step back, then put another block on top of it. Jump up and repeat.

At first I was only building a suicide staircase to test my spawnpoint theories (hence it being made quickly out of dirt) but by the time I was high enough for reliable deaths I was close enough to the water that I could hit it with a running jump - and found out that if the water is deep enough, you'll decelerate before hitting the bottom and indeed survive the fall.
yes Water is really useful because of this property. I found another entrance to a mine of mine that was a naturally occurring mineshaft, it was huge and went down very far. In order to travel down it fast but safely, I throw a block of water down at top to create a waterfall and hey presto, I had a waterslide/lift hehe

BTW, this proved useful a couple of nights ago when I mined into a zombie spawn room. The zombies did their usual aimless milling around directly below me so it was impossible to place blocks and create a safe area. However dropping a few hundred kilos of gravel on their heads shoves them out of the way. I then mined down and opened a floor-level one-block opening to hack at their ankles biggrin

thumbup didn't realise you could build without something underneath it? I will have to investigate later smile
I have floating blocks in my front garden with torches all round. Also makes a space-saving lighting solution for underground crop growing

I like to go exploring, but I keep losing my home by getting lost. A compass would be fantastic.

Either way, tonight im thinking about starting fresh and sacrificing a good home location for a place on the coast where the sun rises.

Worth it? or is their a better way of locating your home without dying when lost.

Cobble stone is a useful marker, dig out the occasional dirt block and replace it with cobblestone. As it isn't naturally occurring (only in certain dungeons) then you know that it's something you've made. Wooden planks could also be used but they've got better uses IMO. When you find some cobblestone, follow the path home.

Nevermind simple markers, you need roads!

Roads?

Where we're going, we don't need...roads.

Sorry biggrin

(I plonked a few sign posts around the place - seems to have generally worked when I wander a bit too far.)

When it first loads the world, Give it 10 seconds or so before moving any where. Then it should be slightly better, That's what I had to do with a slower PC.

after some experimentation last night I found out that glass blocks will also make a very nice wall in to a lagoon so you can have grand designs floating house also if you leave a two block high opening you can irrigate you in door growing trees and it makes a safe way in and out.

Hmm, yeah the free one is rather slo-mo for me, and a bit difficult to control with the pad thing rather than a mouse. Will try it again at uni.
