(stuff about exploring)
All what you have said chimes with what I've read elsewhere. I've been using this http://i.imgur.com/Lw01Dg5.jpg as a guide and it appears to be well founded.Apparently there are some dense clusters of non-sequencing stars near the centre of the galaxy that make for happy scanning grounds.
Not having much luck in the Empire right now, trying to rank up I've taken on a couple of seek and destroy missions but once found, the contract changed of it's own accord. and even killing the required amount of ships did not result in mission success. I know this has been touched on before though so I was half expecting it but it's happened twice now!
So...any tips on how to start getting up the ranks in the Empire?!

The rank system is REALLY pedantic and annoying.
You cannot do ANYTHING wrong, it puts your rep back about 4 missions per infraction.
Pick missions carefully. Only do ones you are certain you can complete. So anything that involves collecting black boxes, activity considered illegal, high profile assignations are too high risk.
Sadly that means courier missions, resource delivery missions and donation missions only. Sorry! Grind some and you will get the equally boring rank missions, when you see them do them no matter what. The Donation missions are more effective at boosting rep. Rule out anything interesting.
Feel like you have hit a brick wall? Move systems. Pick one with a different economy, keep track of the economy type where you ranked up. Try from the bottom with a new faction if often easier than trying to recover rep with a faction where they caught you with stolen goods.
The Mission before the baron mission I got an invitation to summer land, take it and do your missions from that system. And evenings work and I got the baron mission.
If it wasn't for the clipper I would not have bothered. Keep going though because that ship is awesome! I Have no interest ranking up further, I like the baron rank anyway ;-)
Good luck

Thank you, that's really helpful.
One thing that's odd though is that all the missions I can see on the Bulletin Board aren't 'Imperial Navy' in the same way that in the Federation they were labelled 'Federal Navy'. Rather, they are for the major faction in the system which in Gandui where I am right now they are 'Empire Group'. I have great rep with them being Allied to them, so I wasn't sure where I was going wrong.

I found that doing various types of quests for factions in the all the factions in the area of one type was a good way of getting the faction high and concentrate on one particular station to get it to allied. You do need to do all various quests not just trade or killing to rank up quickly

shows what type of quest that will come up to get the next rank up (cant find the site I used but this says whats needed)!

Thanks BG, very useful.
It seems the bug that occurs when you take on a multiple kill mission still hasn't been updated so I took on a single kill mission tonight. It turned out to be an Elite Anaconda but he was dealt with quite speedily now I've changed to a Vulture. I've got a C3 Beam laser and a C3 Fragment Cannon and with a little careful power management it's proving quite a fearsome little ship. The only slight drama was he took out my canopy which meant the HUD all but disappeared. Still made it back to the space station with 8 minutes of oxygen though.
I think part of the problem I'm having is the lack of missions available, I seem to only get a couple of available ones and they're always kill missions. But I'll keep digging away and hopefully work my way up. Thanks again for the tips

A little hint for the explorers out there...I am having a LOT more luck getting "interesting" planets (terraformable, water world and Earth-like) on systems with "A" type stars than any other kind. On my route to the galactic core I am now going exclusively via these types to harvest the extra cash they bring.
Well, great.
A couple of weeks of solid exploring, probably had upwards of 50,000,000 exploration data to sell. Thought I would head to Sagittarius A* but only got about a third of the way before bottling it and heading back to cash in.
About half way back home, sitting stationary repairing a few modules (only minor damage, about 98% health on most of them) when out of nowhere - your ship has been destroyed. One minute 82% hull and 30% heat, next second no alarms, no warnings, nothing - just boom. Absolutely no reason whatsoever.
Have raised a ticket but I very much doubt I'll get any change out of them. All a bit st really. Probably 100+ hours of game time lost to a random bug.

- not nice. I think I'll drag my ass back into populated space (I'm only 1000 Ly away) just in case then.....A couple of weeks of solid exploring, probably had upwards of 50,000,000 exploration data to sell. It's now up on steam, hope they give a steam key to those of us who already have it.
Not sure if it's a good thing or a neither good or bad thing for users. Steam is good for uninstalling/reinstalling managing updates etc, but the ED launcher does the same thing, all DLC are still via the ED site not steam. Good for extra sales for the company though.HiAsAKite said:
So after 3 abortive attempts to head to the centre of the galaxy,I'm now 18.5k my from sol, heading towards Sagittarius A.
The star density is quite something, and the glow of the milky way is expanding...
92% hull fingers crossed, ...
Indeed, the effects as you get closer to the centre look pretty good. I've now re-equipped my Asp for deep space (more heatsinks, and extra hull strengthening) which has reduced the jump range to 31ly but gives me a bit more headroom for careless moments. This time my plan is to get to Sagittarius A* and just float about there for a bit scanning star type A systems. As you say, the density is something else compared with some completely dead space areas on the way in.The star density is quite something, and the glow of the milky way is expanding...

Frontier got back to me about my previous ship destruction...apparently it is something that has been reported by a few pilots and is under investigation. I've been given my ship rebuy costs + 5,000,000 credits as compensation but my exploration data is lost. I don't care about the credits but I feel the loss of the data...I'd found some really interesting stuff including about 6 earthlikes, countless terraformable worlds and even some 100% metal planets. Ho hum.
thanks for the hint on A class stars - have been adding that in and on the whole they're definitely a good visit - nice one! i now want to find whatever a 'wolf-rayet' star is
Obviously if still in 'inhabited' space, just setting the view to economy and switching off everything except 'terraforming' and 'tourism' gives a very big return quite quickly (one of my scans, which I lost after deciding to fight it out with an elite python, oops, was from a terra planet near yembo which included 13 100% metal planets dammit)
so....how are you guys managing to generate damage when out exploring? aside from accidentally flying into a sun or not paying attention when fuel scooping, im not quite sure??
