New PC racing sim - Assetto Corsa
Discussion
The default aggressive set ups are almost bang on though.
Only thing that really needs changing is the tyre temps. For some reason a lot of the online lobbies like setting the track temp ridiculously high.
Like most things the game just needs practice and more practice. Take zolder for instance, you can gain around a second on a lot of people just by crashing through the chicane in the middle of the track. Getting the right line is key as you don't want to cut the chicane but the cars can take a lot of punishment.
Watching the fast guys on YouTube hot laps also helps, I found I was unnecessarily changing up to 6th on the approach to the second chicane at Monza when you won't hit the rev limiter in 5th before you need to start braking.
Think ACC is the game I've played the most in years, I only ever seem to do the same 5 tracks (Monza, Spa, Zolder, Bathurst & Kyalami) and I'm still not bored!
Looking forward to the British GT update though!

I’ve had this game for a few weeks now, mainly been practising the same track and car over and over to get competitive online.
My best lap around Monza is 1min 49.1. Aggressive setting with TC and ABS on 2.
YouTube has videos of people doing 1min 45, I don’t know how I can be 4secs off this time. The best lap I’ve seen in an actual race is 1.47.5 which is fair enough, there’s always going to be ppl faster I just can’t believe I can be 4secs off in a lap.
Any tips?
I'm the same, I can pound around for hours but can never get closer than 4 or 5 seconds off the best times. It killed interest in the game for me and I just had to accept I'm not very good at it and will never really be able to compete with my mates. After a while being a mobile chicane just got boring. My best lap around Monza is 1min 49.1. Aggressive setting with TC and ABS on 2.

A lot of my problem seems to be I just cant get the hang of the whole braking into a corner thing. My mates will brake really late and are able to smoothly transfer from brake to throttle midway through the corner. It's just not something I can master, some corners it works but mostly I'm off the track and in the gravel. Gave up trying in the end as it was just deeply frustrating.

You are not on your own, I am consistently a few second slower than the real alien freaks. There is always someone faster even if you are being consistent and doing as well as you can/
AS I say it is not about you so much, as about understanding the game, the physics and what to tweak settings wise.
I would say most drivers with any competence are perhaps 2 seconds apart.
The rest is all about wheels, unique driving styles, tricky setups and basics like PC speeds, monitors, wheels etc.

Honestly it's sometimes worth accepting that you'll find it hard to get anywhere near the aliens times.
I do low 49's and sometimes mid 48s at Monza which usually puts me quite easily in the top half of a public lobby race.
Another tip is use brake pads number 4. They are a very aggressive friction compound. Only any good for races of 25 mins or less though as they wear down by around 30mins.

I’ve watched a few of the “alien” laps on you tube and most just say they use the aggressive set-up. I think most of the time is made up by trial braking which I find really hard.
I do notice the abs light flashing when I brake so I’m trying to brake just hard enough for it not to to see if that makes a difference.
I always opts for brakes pads “1”, I’ll give “4” a go too.

I know what I'm going to be trying later.
Realistic shader/filter - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hP_Nw_ObjNU
That looks more realistic than anything else I have seen, got the muted colours no cartoon colour palette. It looks like TV.
Ps and this, rainy rain - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YcVQoQD2sM
And then combine both - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1r4ch-TrEE

Just to add more confusion between the games...
Assetto Corsa Competizione has been updated with DLSS & FSR. Which means you can crank those settings up and still get fast frame rates.

I've started playing the original assetto again after a couple of years not touching it. Online racing is seriously immersive, it's genuinely brilliant. I had to park it for a couple of years for fear of waking my young kids as the wheel makes a racquet when arm twirling after the latest corner exit cockup.
I use;
1* super old Microsoft sidewinder wheel
1* shh shifter (H pattern and Seq mode) -great!
1* three pedal thrustmaster gear.
The aliens that play are consistently 2-3 seconds a lap faster but I think they must specialise on specific circuit and car combos.
My favourite is Spa and a 911 RSR 2017, it is a wonderful circuit with the TC forced off. Typical fastest qualifying online was 2:15.5 this evening, with my setup the best I could get was 2:19.5. After 2 hours and youtubing a setup that is good for 2:14.5 I managed a measly 2:16.9. I think the setup was worth 2 seconds over my original and made the thing easier to drive.
What the time improvement did was allow me to be competitive in the 3rd to 10th positions in the race. I enjoy qualifying poorly and making my way through as quickly as I can. I'm surprised this game is not more popular among the budding racers and trackday users on this forum as it is so immersive at a fraction of the cost. I can see many nights playing this again.
N.b. The above is on a PC and I have played the same game on a mates Xbox and it was diabolically bad, it was just not the same which is a real shame.

Funny you say that as I loaded AC for the first time in ages last night. Had a lot of fun with the MX5 Cup car, then with a couple of different Porsches. I use;

Might start playing it more again as I feel a bit left left behind with the latest ACC update, not a massive amount seems to have a change but the combination of little things has left me quite far off the pace and with little free time to experiment I don't want to be racing around at the back again!
I usually spend my sim time on RF2, but as it's not all that often, i seem to spend most of that time waiting for content to update and staring at loading screens.
Jumped on to AC last week and got hit with glaring sun, realistic maybe, but i couldn't see st so gave up.
Tried again today, found the tickbox to turn off the sunrays and we're back in business!
Also getting to grips with TrackTitan, hoping to improve my dismal laptimes.

I've not set up my VR & wheel at my new house yet but will do it at some point.
Did a lot of drifting on AC, the custom content and tracks are insane. Big thing I love is just the open-ness of some servers being in a track day style.
Being able to just hop in and potter about is great, VR on the drifting is great fun, being able to properly look out the side windows makes it much more intuitive.
Racing is generally good but very server dependent. Fine if you've got a respectful group of folk, GT86 servers are usually good for clean racing. GT3 cars are typically a nightmare as you'll get folk cannonballing you at the first corner. Doing a 3,600 degree spin without any warning in VR is seriously vomit inducing

So I have spunked some of my hard earned on a couple of "pre-orders". I've ordered the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro bundle (Works on PS5 and PC) which isn't out until March 2022. I've also ordered a Trac Racer TR80 sim/setup.
As well as GT7 I'm looking at playing some PC sims also. Assetto Corsa looks superb but which one/DLC should I be buying? Does only the Competition one have the GT cars? Also IRacing. Has it always been a monthly fee to play it?
