I don't think I should look too closely at that, it might cost me the lion's share of my 30s...

X3: Reunion looks quite similar.

Similar? It's the frikkin same!
Seriously though, the X series is the closest you'll get to Elite. I used to be a huge fan of the games but the dogfighting was awful and incredibly frustrating so I gave up after I lost my game in X2.

There was a new version of Elite on Amazon pre-order but it doesn't seem to be there now.

Played X2 a lot. Combat is poor, improved some in X3. Trading/manufacturing/plot etc is great if flawed at times. X3 is supposed to be better.

Eve online didnt impress at first but with most MMO's they improve with age.

Elite on the Amstrad CPC (think I got to 'Deadly') and Frontier on the Amiga (great, great game).

I wondered if anyone would remember that one. Wonderful idea, never really gelled for me (and I had it on tape for the CPC, so load times were epic).

EVE-Online.... don't go there.
It's horribly... horribly.
Addictive.

However if you want an interesting little joy ride, check out the I-War (or Independance War) games (might need to use fleabay they are old) neutonian physics all the way and both games had pretty engrossing storylines to them. I still play I-War on my machine every so often, it's good... hard but good.
