Dunno I've never needed to ask for help with a game before, let alone to find out how to start leveling up!

I only found there is sort of a help section in the inventory not that it's any help really

After the false start with the prisoner based build I've been having a pretty good time with my current wretch based character. Using the hook claws and Claymore with the demi human spirit ashes when I can have them. I've been everywhere up to the lift of dectus above ground and I'm exploring underground at the moment. I need to clear Castle Redmane but the sword lion guy was giving me some trouble so I left it for a bit.

Trying to decide whether to respec and try some of the other weapons I have but none of them are levelled as high as the two I'm using.

I focused on one at a time, once you can break their poise and make them stagger then they stay like that, making them much more susceptible to damage. I personally used the mimic tear to keep them busy and flung rock sling around until I'd got the one focused on me out of the way, once that's done you should have a much easier time dealing with the remaining pair.

How hard is this game? I've read pretty much the entire thread and I've been attracted/put off in equal measure.

I've happy to sink hours into a good game to get some rewards but if it's just too f*cking hard I'll bail, I tend to play for the storylines more than anything else. Also I'm desperate for that "next game" to get me hooked in. Would this be too hard for somebody that mainly plays "story mode"?

Done Red Dead, Gods of War, Assassins, Last of Us, Senua, CyberPunk, GTA, Horizons etc

I might seriously have to spend some time outside!

There's not a story line so much, there's a lot of lore but it's well hidden and it's more the challenge of the game than the plot that keeps you moving forward.

It's not as hard as other Fromsoft games imo, if you get stuck you can just go do something else for a bit and there's even some bosses you can run past if you don't want to deal with them yet.

I've never been that big of a Fromsoft game fan but I'm really liking this.

I would say though that if you generally play on story mode then this would be a big step up from that, there's not much to make it easier early on besides lots of farming for runes to level up, even then you can easily get stomped by the regular enemies if you're complacent.

Yeah it took me a few attempts, case of getting a few off, then making space once he has closed the gap, all the while avoiding the other fight taking place and trying to make sure it's done quickly enough that the mimic doesn't die.

The Crystalian type enemies have very high damage reduction until you break their poise, at which point they become extremely vulnerable to damage. They are extremely weak to striking damage, so use that against them. You can see the damage type of a weapon under it's name on the inventory page, the different types for physical weapons are strike, slash, pierce and standard. Things like maces, hammers etc, that don't have any bladed edge or thrusting attacks are nearly always strike damage. Alongside those base damage types, you will see the fire, magic, holy etc, but that's irrelevant for this fight.

The Crystalians take reduced damage from everything but striking, so pick your best striking weapon and bring that along. If you're playing a melee build, or anything other than a pure magic build, I'd recommend having at least striking weapon upgraded to a decent level. The best one in the game, certainly the most useful on your first playthrough, is the Great Stars, obtained from one of those funeral processions pulled by trolls on the Altus Plateau.

If you can equip the talismans that give you bonus damage on charged attacks and guard counters, they will be useful too.

For the fight, if you have the Mimic Ashes, upgrade it as high as it will go. Don't feel concerned about putting your rare upgrade materials into it, as it is by far the best summon in the game. Prior to the fight, cast "Flame, Grant Me Strength" if you have it, and chug you mixed physik flash - set it up for increased stamina regeneration and increased strength if you have the right cracked tears to do that. Two hand your weapon to start, but have a shield equipped, as most striking weapons tend to scale well with strength and two-handing a weapon gives you an effective bonus to your strength stat of 50%. Two handing at the start will allow you to completely crush the mage before he gets a chance to do any real offense.

When the fight begins, summon the mimic, chug a potion to heal and then rush around the back of the group. The ring blade and spear enemies will probably lock onto the mimic, as it will rush in to meet them in combat. Use jumping heavy attacks, which deal big poise damage, to knock the mage to the ground. Hit him with a critical and repeat, dodge and roll away from your pursuers and focus the mage down.

As soon as the mage is dead, switch back to single-handing and let the spear Crystalian attack you and bounce off your shield, then do a guard counter. You'll only need to do this perhaps twice to stagger him. When he staggers, hit a critical and then do a charged heavy attack as he stands up and the invincibility frames in his standing up animation end. Rinse and repeat until he is dead. After that, just go and assist your mimic in killing the ring blade enemy and it's job done.

On my first playthrough, I thought this was one of the hardest fights in the game and in many ways, it is still one of the cheesiest bosses due to the way the enemies just gank you and leave you no room to breathe. The mage is by far the most dangerous enemy, as his continuous crystal blast has high damage over time and can easily kill you in a single cast if you get caught in its path. The constant tick damage of the scarlet rot is more of an annoying distraction than anything else. A few of these gank squad boss fights come down to simply avoiding the crowd while continuously casting spells, or if you're a melee build, a DPS check to see if you can whittle the aggressors down to a manageable number before you get overwhelmed.

Like many bosses in this game, using the right damage type is key. If you have the Mimic ashes however, everything becomes significantly easier, even if your loadout and strategy are really badly thought out, since the mimic is way, way tankier than most other summons.

Really enjoying this now. 18 hours in. After BF2942 I was very disillusioned with the PS5.

Done very little googling and just been getting on with it. I don’t have a clue about the magic side of it so may need to look into that.

Okay the initial challenge/hurdle you will face is having no idea where you are going at the start. It's part of the charm of these games where you can accidentally end up down the wrong path that is nearly impossible as you are way too low a level. So that is likely where you will get off the band wagon. However, if you watch a basic guide on how to get started with either a dex or strength based character and where to initially go then that will at least mean your efforts aren't made in futility. After that you start to learn about levelling up and every level slowly makes the game a little easier.

I'd definitely give this a go and don't give up. The satisfaction from getting good at this game far outweighs any sense of satisfaction from a more story based game.

Watch a video like "ten things you should know when you start elden ring" or something like that. Each time u hit a brick wall reach out for more guidance from the community but try and play blind where you can so the surprise is a reward.

Good luck.

That's why I did it too.

Still you keep all your kit, levels everything, map all found just sites of grace needing to be found again, plus with "knowledge" you know where to go quicker, no aimless wandering wasting time.

But still plenty of first time things left though. I'm 24 out of 42 achievements, barely halfway though everything.

I'm on NG+ now, but as others have rightly pointed out, you can only experience a game like Elden Ring blind once. That is why I recommend against using guides or looking for advice on where to go and in what order. A big part of what makes this game so good is the experience of organically crossing the world and findings the amazing things in it.

I had hoped that NG+ would scale the difficulty a little harder, as I am now completely crushing everything. I did my first playthrouh using a fairly safe Uchigatana and shield build, for my second run I'm using thrusting swords for a different flavour of combat and mixing in colossal weapons too for fun. Perhaps in the second half of the game the challenge will ramp up, but it has been very easy going so far.

Maybe this isn't such a bad thing, as if they add in some high-level DLC, I might be appropriately geared and leveled for it.

If you have the Mimic ashes however, everything becomes significantly easier, even if your loadout and strategy are really badly thought out, since the mimic is way, way tankier than most other summons.
thank you. im not sure i have that weapon so will go hunting for it. im more a magic build but may need to go farming to get strength and dex up to use a heavy weapon
