Looks like I might need an SRV after all!
You don't currently need an SRV to scan surface beacons... You can use the data link scanner on your ship if you fly close enough to the surface. This is currently a unintended part of the patch, so just waiting for fdev to remove all ship scanners from the game... Just like missions etc. This is where I'm going tomorrow if it's not too far, then it'll be Sunday+, I think some ship launched fighter canyon flying is in order.

What are you flying in at the mo FWD?
The current hangar - https://inara.cz/cmdr-fleet/22088/Probably take the Anaconda (it's 715 Ly from my home base) as it's got a 52ly jump range with an SLF and SRV bay fitted - https://eddp.co/u/8kJG8yKg

And thus, the great thing about elite is all the various playstyles.
As I mainly shield tank, If my shields drop, ill already be mid high-wake charge unless they are sub 20% hull.
On something like a hull tank, I'd take the PD over the chaff for reasons above (missile/torp hull damage). But on a shield tank, the time off being hit allowing shield regen and also stopping a vast amount of bee sting DPS (lots of little bits of damage) greatly helps survival time in my experience.

It also depends on the ship I fly, for example I use the Gunship with bi-weaves and loads of hull reinforcements as the A7 distributor recharges the shields quite quickly. Some other ships I rather use as shield tank.
I have to add, that I am very far from a refined combat pilot - for example I'm yet to master the pip management and I only turn FA off occasionally.
Grinder the last 10 mill in my viper from some power grid destruction/ data link scan missions from a dodgy looking guy with sunglasses.
Now in my Chieftain! Was able to get into it and fit a few 5b/6b modules and have about 11 mil left over to fund those expensive rebuys (hopefully won't need them). Of course I didn't realise I still had a bounty on my old ship until It came to sorting through the old modules to sell, cleaning A grade modules is expensive.
Running 5 multi-cannons and 1 medium seeker missle launcher left over from my viper.
Compared to the Viper this thing is like a leaf in the wind. So easy to keep the sights on target almost 100% of the time.

What ship are you using? LCZ’s are harder for some reason. You need to wait a second before joining a faction once figguring out who is winning. Also take a break to allow shields to charge etc. And make sure you don’t get wanted status as everyone will turn on you.
Dropped into a system near Maia this weekend. Saw a distress call in the navigation menu and popped out of super cruise to see a destroyed mega ship, and a Thargoid floating around.
Dropped into the event at the same time as another play. Had a friendly chat, discussed whether we should poke the alien for fun and then went on collecting materials.
I put off playing in open for ages worried that I would get griefed, but out side of the Bubble at least, everyone I have come across has been really friendly.
Hoe the hell do you find the Thargoid sites though? Been floating around Maia where there is supposed to be loads of sites and simply cannot find a single one. Just barren planet after barren planet. Are these things marked or is it just sheer luck you stumble on them whilst crawling around the planets? I know I can look up co-ordinates etc but would be nice if the game had some mechanism to help you find all this stuff.

It is tough, flying low waiting to find a big blue circle PIO to drop down onto only to find something else.
Or you could use Elite's version of the National Geographic - https://canonn.science/
