I don't think you can trade Mew as it's a mythical.If it's a legendary or shiny that he one of you don't have expect it to cost a lot of stardust, and you can only do one special trade a day - a trade where one of you don't have the pokemon in question. You will lose it from your pokebox so can't use it for battling anymore,but it will still be in your pokedex just like anything you have transferred to the professor for candy.
A Legendary that you don't have for example will be 1 million stardust, this goes down depending on your friend level to a minimum of 40k stardust once best friends.
IV's change on a trade too, so just because it is a good pokemon before transferring it can turn rubbish after a trade, although the pokemon level won't change.
I have a local mate who plays, and I'm trying to get him to "Ultra Friend" status, before going for a beer and a look round his new house.
Once we're Ultra Friends, it shouldn't be too expensive for us to swap a Milktank for a Kangastan, helping both of us with ones we don't have.
I also have a bunch of Trapinches for him, and will happily take Pidgeys for them, to save him some walking. (If he has a spare Bagon or Beldrum, that would be better for me though.)
After that I have a load of Rattatas I caught in Aberdeen and a few things from San Diego eggs to trade with him to try and get the badge for distance trades. (And a few Dutch ones from a PH-er...)

16k -> 1.6k at "Ultra Friend" though. Plus he's moving house so I won't see him in the next couple of weeks anyway, but I see what you mean.The Rattata trades will only ever be 100 stardust too,
Rattata trades going down to 8 Stardust is very low though, essentially free. (And only worth doing for the distance badge and number of trades badge.)
I might have to try and grab a white Vulpix, as I've not hatched one yet.

I got my Ultra friend yesterday too 
I have to say, all this present trading is boosting my level quite a bit, up to just over level 31 now, was late 29 when I started. I wonder if they may nerf it in the future. Make hay while the (30C) sun shines and all that. Also congrats to whoever it is on my list that caught their Mewtwo! I noticed it when I was sending some presents out, then forgot who it was. D'oh.
I thought Tauros was USA only?
While I remember - when I go to my gym badges there is a badge for "Ace Trainer" Train 10 times. Any idea what this means / involves?
