Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Discussion
There are existing third party aircraft in the trailer so I assume old stuff is usable.
If it's a paid upgrade with everything older importable then that's fine. They gotta eat I suppose. But there'll still be tons of people who'll want to use the old one and now there's an incentive to get them away from it.
Hope they've thought it all through.

Ok. The official news is that Flight Simulator 2024 will be a new sim that you will have to purchase, but all 3rd party add-ons and FS marketplace purchase can be installed or transferred over without paying for them again.
4 years between 2020 and 2024, it was only 2 years between FS 9 and FSX.

Good stuff, but 'almost all' is a bit ominous.
I presume anything with external coding like the Fenix will have to be rewritten.
And going on the trailer the elevations look to be of higher quality so I expect quite a bit of scenery will need a tweak.
I can foresee abandoned ones becoming a lumpy mess and plenty of other paid upgrades.

I hope it will seamlessly ( lol ) upgrade the old version on Gamepass I don't fancy a 2 day install.4 years between 2020 and 2024, it was only 2 years between FS 9 and FSX.
Not so sure I like this. I’ve invested a huge amount of cash and setup time in 2020 and only recently became comfortable with it. I’ve no issue sticking with this version for a while, although if it’s not patched or developed once 2024 is released, it’ll feel a little unfair to be honest.
I’d rather a paid upgrade to give them some cash whilst taking it up a level.

It does go against the modern ethos of software delivery. Continous incremental delivery. Coming out with an entirely new version is quite odd.I’d rather a paid upgrade to give them some cash whilst taking it up a level.
Unless they have realised that the underlying architecture is wrong and the only way is to start fresh, but we all know what that means. Buggy software and limited functionality. It took them really a couple of years to get 20 stable and of 24 is a blankbsheet restart that's another 2 years of crap.
Plus as you say, what happens to 20? If that's going to be sunset and everyone forced to move over its a bit rich.
