From a narrative POV, GTA IV remains the peak for me.

Agree 100%. Just having something to do at the end of the main story missions would be nice, I'm don't have time to entertain an online grind which is pushing you to shortcut via your wallet. From a gameplay and sandbox POV, San Andreas was peak.
And then for personal nostalgia, setting and soundtrack, Vice City was my favourite.
This one I won't be pre-ordering, having been burnt by so many recent releases it's just not worth it anymore.
Peak GTA for me was San Andreas:
- Incredible map, scale and diversity
- '90s west coast setting
- Soundtrack (if you're an old school hip-hop guy like me)
- Storyline, characters etc.
- Memorable missions (that bloody train mission!)
- Great car selection too, Infernus (NSX) was always in my garage
- Lots of weapons, aircraft etc. including a learjet
- And you could even get a jetpack!
The other instalment I have fond memories of is GTA III. For a game released in 2001 it was ahead of its time.

SA was amazing, I was pretty disapointed when 4 came, much smaller map, no planes, very few helicopters etc. In fairness, SA was obviously limited by hardware, with iV they seemed to focus on detail and graphics. - Incredible map, scale and diversity

Unpopular opinion but I thought IV was boring. I did however really enjoy one of its spin-offs, The Ballad of Gay Tony. It didn't take itself too seriously - had that lunacy, colour and crazy characters which I always associate with GTA games.

It was never for me, open world was a cesspit, the missions were a repetitive grind to earn a few $ to buy the latest reskinned car or gun.
I don't like online gaming much at all really.
Sort of, but my garage is aweeeeesome... Batmobile, Flying bike, F1 type cars......... I don't like online gaming much at all really.

Agreed the variety of landscape was amazing, it was pretty much all there. The size oif the map meant even aircraft flights were pretty decent and a good selection of airports to fly to. - Incredible map, scale and diversity

Vice city was just a moment in time, perfection. Love them all but that just hit the spot in a way not many games ever do a fit was partially the setting, a bit of it being a good game but the soundtrack was what sealed the deal.
Sounds like they know this and are harking back to it based on the limited info.
5 was, and still is fantastic so keen to see what they do next.

Wrong. But interesting

Every rockstar game is a better game than the one that proceeded it.
RDR2 is amazing, once you tune into the 'unique' controlls.
On technical level GTA5 may be the best GTA game but on story, playability and just pure fun Vice and San Andreas are still my faves.
I prefer the period setting with both and all the references that they layering in.
My pitch for a future GTA game would be a Late 80s Britain set in London (or London influenced) and the surrounding areas (Essex, Surrey Kent) featuring :
Grimy 80s London
An M25 complete with random illegal raves
A mix of the 80s sub cultures Yuppies, Skinheads, Punks, new Romantics, early Hiphop culture
Thatcher Britain references
Costa del Essex type characters
Dover and white cliffs and some nice English countryside and agriculture.
80s hot hatches and supercars
Doubt it would ever get made though as its a very american franchise.
