HTC Vive...let's try this VR stuff..

I think the resolution will need to be a lot higher to eliminate SDE which is why I'm supporting the PiMax I linked a few pages back.
What I think is interesting about these new hmds is not the resolution but the inside out tracking, if it's as good as the outside in then that alone will bring down costs and hence improve adoption.
SDE is more a function of the gaps between the pixels than resolution. It is possible to have a display that eliminates the SDE but be no higher resolution than current displays. I'm sure newer displays targeted for VR will up the resolution but also greatly reduce the SDE. Higher resolutions of course are harder to drive though requiring eye tracking and foveated rendering. What I think is interesting about these new hmds is not the resolution but the inside out tracking, if it's as good as the outside in then that alone will bring down costs and hence improve adoption.
Inside out tracking is definitely the direction we need to go but there are a couple of big issues currently. It can take time to build the spatial map to do very fast updates and controllers lose spatial tracking when not in the headset's tracking FOV.
Whilst playing some more Assetto Corsa this evening, I was adjusting the headset a bit as it had been on a while, and clearly found exactly the right position as everything was just that little bit sharper and pixels even less obvious.
I then proceeded to play for another 30 minutes or so enjoying this extra clarity, and I must say I'm impressed also with how well the headset stays in position, given how precise you need to be to get the best image quality.
I'm yet to suffer any sort of motion sickness even given extended play. It does make my head sort of internally double take a bit in certain situations, chiefly say you've gone off the road and the scenery you're about to go over sharply rises / falls, when the car climbs / drops my brain is obviously expecting to feel a significant trajectory change which doesn't come. I can imagine if this was constantly happening it may become uncomfortable, I haven't tried Dirt Rally yet which would probably be the 'worst case' for that sort of thing.
The other aspect is when looking out the side window of the car, the motion of turning my head back straight ahead as the car rotates around a hairpin causes a slightly odd sensation, again as there's expected to be some movement that isn't happening. Interestingly in an F1 car I experienced none of that sensation at all, and in fact it felt much more natural to move my head around whilst driving.
This rotation feeling has already begun to subside this evening compared to last night however, as presumably my brain is accepting the idea that in this situation the rotational feeling doesn't come.
As for the acrophobia, that's still very much there and so illogical! I shall keep trying out the two 'experiences' I have access to at the moment that are set very high up, and expect it to lessen with repeated exposure.
The desire to buy the touch controllers that I was convinced I'd never use is growing daily

The other interesting thing is they appear, at least from the MS demo to be wireless, the wires are my biggest bugbear at the moment.
Looks like that Samsung will support MS stuff and SteamVR, which has to be good. I think OR and their walled garden are going to lose this.
I'm also backing the 8K (1440 upscaled) as I'm really only interested in SDE removal over resolution, and GPU tech needs to move along if native 4k/8k or whatever they want to call it is going to be at 90fps.What I think is interesting about these new hmds is not the resolution but the inside out tracking, if it's as good as the outside in then that alone will bring down costs and hence improve adoption. I did a bit of reading on the pimax as I thought, how the hell are they gonna push 8K pixels? You are going to need 4 x 1080ti's just to get a decent frame-rate! Until I found out it's not 8K, the 4k one isn't even proper 4K but 1440p upscaled to 4K. It's an improvement over what we have now but the naming is a bit misleading.

Oculus Rift and a 970 GTX On the subject of SDE, this is about the best image I've found to show the improvement of the CV1 over the DK2.
In both cases they're probably slightly worse than the image, i.e. SDE is slightly more pronounced on both devices than in that image, but it is a significant improvement.
I found with the DK2 it did feel like looking through a black screen door, whereas on the CV1 it simply feels like the image itself is slightly pixelated. It's a very difficult thing to describe, you get a sort of diagonal criss cross effect, but it isn't dark like on the DK2, it's looks like a slightly lighter criss cross of the surrounding pixels, which makes it a lot easier to ignore, and a lot easier to see detail further in the distance.
I'm a bit of a VR addict now, the only problem I have sickness wise is if I spin a car in a racing game and it goes backwards, I have to close my eyes.
I've also put my name down for the badly named Pimax 8k, as resolution is the only thing that is slightly disappointing with the Rift.

I have a 970gtx and it's running Assetto Corsa as well as it ever has, I use the 1.5 pixel density setting
. . .

That sounds like you might be dropping framerate in certain situations, which can bring on a disconnect feeling as the headset struggles to display what your head is doing as it's moving quickly. Try running the oculus tray tool / debug tool to check you framerates with the overlay - you may have to turn down your super sampling.. . .

I have just ordered:
HP Windows Mixed Reality Headset - http://store.hp.com/us/en/cv/mixed-reality-headset
As a complete newbie what games or apps are worth starting off with for me and the family?
Separately I have an interest in 3D terrain mapping and displaying virtual & CAD engineered products to customers. Again its all quite new to me so any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.

I bought my son A Vive last week whilst drunk!
WHAT a purchase. I'm 45 and never played games, I am hooked. The immersion is for me incredible.
I am of a similar age and never play games but think I could get into it. My issue is that my expectations are always too high and the quality of many games are disappointing, never really had the wow factor yet.WHAT a purchase. I'm 45 and never played games, I am hooked. What games do you like or could suggest for the middle age crowd! : D
My Vive is going on Ebay next weekend. I have really enjoyed the experience, its been great, just finances and needing to free up money quickly. I would highly recommend one to anyone thinking about getting a Vive, the biggest plus for me being that letting anyone else have a go really blows their minds.
I've thought about selling mine, but the price drop of the Rift has hit the used market a bit so I don't think it's worth it.
Also, the new Pimax 8K headsets (which are getting very, very positive reviews) work with the HTC base units and handsets, so might be worth holding on if your interested in the 'next gen' (of sorts).

How much would you expect to get, I have no idea by the way?Matt1977 said:
What are peoples thoughts on the higher resolution headsets from China? Any with room-scale yet? Touch controllers? I've had a quick look once or twice and found both absent.
As above, re: the Pimax 8K (or 8K X if you're rocking crazy power) works with HTC stations and controllers for room scale.https://www.engadget.com/2017/10/12/pimax-8k-vr-he...
"High resolution and 200deg FoV makes other headsets feel last gen"
It's getting great reviews, especially due to the reduction in SDE and much greater FoV. Interesting to see people get hold of them at the end of the year.
So, once I've wrapped up a job for a particularly demanding customer and get paid, I'm going to buy a PS VR as a treat to myself.
I'd just like to ask how people find this? I think there's an updated verision just been released in Japan but no release date for over here just yet.
I've not tried VR at all, but even just the possibility of being able to play 2D in the cinematic mode with a huge screen is a big draw. I was looking at a possible projector and screen, but this hopefully negates the need.
I have my PS4 set up in the bedroom to leave the lounge free for my wife in the evenings, so will be playing while on the bed about 10ft from the PS4. I won't be standing etc.
Your thoughts are most welcome
