I have a 1080 fortunately. To get the best experience you do need a good GPU and yes, they are expensive.
New tech is always expensive for early adopters. I think its positive that AAA titles are coming to VR, the Doom game is only in VR so Bethesda think there is enough money/demand there to support it and despite what the fanboys say it is expensive and it is niche.
Sony are into it with the PSVR, MS are driving a similar path with their mixed reality which is essentially VR right now, no mixed about it, facebook are in via OR and other hardware makers are supporting the whole thing.
It's going to come down in price and up in performance. It just needs the killer apps/support.

I actually think that the space requirement is a bigger issue for room scale than the cost.

I don't think resolutions or hardware will be what limits VR, it's the sheer faff of it.

A VR head set needs to be as lightweight as some clip on sunglasses, and wireless too. Until then it feels a bit like preparing a Saturn V launch.

I have a PSVR. It's quite something. At the same time most of the time I can't be arsed to sort out a millions wires and make sure my glasses don't scratch the lenses so it sits in the box.

Faff.

That is the killer for me too. I'm looking at buying myself a 4K monitor instead of a VR hat because there is no faff involved.

The faff is a one-off though, isn't it? Or is that the PSVR?

I've a Rift (and DK2) and mine is on a stand next to my keyboard. I just pick it up and put it on. No faff... but I think you mean the PSVR needs cables unplugging/plugging due to the nature of the thing. I think the "new" one does away with some of that, but I can understand it that was the meaning.

Have you tried VR on a Vive or OR?

I have a Vive. I'm lucky I have a gaming room with all my consoles, gaming PC, driving chair set up and ready to go. The biggest PITA is swapping the HDMI output of the PC from the big telly to the Vive. Apart from that I boot up, start the game, put on the headset and drive any track in the world in pretty much any car. Is it more of a faff than playing on the telly? A bit, I suppose, but that's the nature of the beast. If you don't want to wear a headset with some leads attached then I would hazard a guess that VR isn't for you.

I have mine connected via displayport so I can have the screen and vive working at the same time.
It's not really a faff after the initial set-up.
I just start VR and put the HS on.

Exactly this for the PSVR, you have cables going to the PS4, the separate box, the eye camera and the VR headset as well as a power supply, I think there is about 6 things to plug in. The cable for the eye camera isn't long enough so you have to have it close to the PS4. Setting up the damn thing takes about 10 minutes of swearing under your desk before you are ready to go.

Jeez, I don't know how the snowflakes would cope with 30 minute loading times from tape on a Speccy back in the day. laugh

Same I run DP to the vive and monitor as normal.

The Mrs has started to get into VR now too. She is not normally into computer games either. Well I say get into she has had a go 4 or 5 times now. That said that's 4 or 5 times more than any other games system I have had in the last 20 years!

Snowflake? I think you'll probably find I've done plenty of waiting for tapes to load in my time. wink

I think that's the problem, I'm probably too old now to be bothered with bending around under my desk, faffing around with cables etc. My gaming time is usually limited too now so even less incentive.

I remember the PSVR was a faff to set up initially but it had a breakout box was pretty much a one off exercise.
I guess if you want to remove the camera and unplug the HMD then it's a bit more effort but that's your choice really. I had an extension lead for the camera as I had to stretch the camera to the front of the room where my PS4 was along the side.

Ah, load stuff from tapes, those were the days. I get annoyed if something takes more than 10s to load now.

I almost went for it the other day but decided to wait as my gpu will never run it in a million years.

Ok great, I don't know much about it. Do you feel its a gamechanger, many clearly do looking at the volume of donations!

I think gamechanger is a big strong but it hopefully addresses some of the issues of the current generation namely SDE and field of view which are both supposed to be very good.
Wireless would be another advantage if they can pull it off and combine that with eye tracking to enable foveated rendering and leapmotion for hand motion detection its covering a lot of bases. I think it's more generation 1.75 than 2. With it working inside the steamvr framework it's got a lot of software available out the door even if they have to fudge the fov early on.
The potential was enough to get me interested.

I don't know if you have seen it but Linus has had one to play with.

The main issue seems to be getting stable FPS.

And it's an upgrade for the Vive (and wireless on its way).

Highlights -
Better resolution 2880 x 1600 vs 2160x1200 (across both eyes)
Improved ergonomics/balance
Upgraded audio

https://blog.vive.com/us/2018/01/08/htc-vive-raise...

Talk of a rebate/upgrade program.

Price is going to be the big question.
