HTC Vive...let's try this VR stuff..
Discussion
Had a vive all over Christmas with two teenage sons. It was my first foray into VR. I set up a large and empty room in the house with the room scale stuff. Bought a lot of the steam games on sale on the run up to Christmas. Super VR all the free ones a couple of haunted and dungeon and dragons/puzzle type games so a good selection.
Boys thought it was the best thing since sliced bread on day one. couldn't get them off it and we were taking it in turns to play. All games played with notable recommendations for project cars 2, google paint and VR superhot. Longbow on the free side did well. There was a PUBG variant that did well also
By day four boys could be encouraged to play but were seeing the down sides of it, by the end of the week of Christmas they would occasionally play superhot but were bored of everything else and spent more time using a keyboard and mouse on normal games that they seemed to enjoy much more
The vive got passed onto my father for playing Microsoft flight simulator. I suspect the room scale and hand controls will never be used again. My conclusions are that I'm glad I experienced it but ultimately it has a very long way to go until any game is as challenging as those which hold my sons interest on normal computers. I'm not sure what they are going to do regarding any sort of realist movement.
I think I'll leave VR for now and come back in a few years time. Wasn't the ending I was expecting.

I got a PSVR over Christmas to go with my PS4 Pro and whilst I'm enjoying some of the games (Start Trek Bridge Crew and Resident Evil for example) the most use I've had out of it is for sitting watching films in cinematic view. I was considering upgrading my PC and getting a vive system but my taste of VR via PSVR has convinced me that it wouldn't be a useful investment.
On a related note I've also bought a Gear VR, which again, I mainly use for watching Netflix/3D films on. The games are alright but being able to retire to a virtual environment to watch what I want to watch is nice sometimes. The only problem VR headsets is the inability to have a drink whilst wearing them. Sitting watching a film sipping whiskey through a straw is not ideal......

I know what you mean. Very few of the room scale games are long term engaging, great experiences but not playing for 100 hours good. That said, not sure I want to wear a VR headset for 3/4/5 hour sessions anyway. I think the exception is Fallout I've avoided it because I logged nearly 150 hrs in total and didn't want to do that again with a HMD (plus I was cheesed off it's the same game again and I already own the normal version, so not paying full price).
On the other hand, I rarely get more than a couple of hours in a stint now so VR works nicely for lots of short sessions.
As it stands the best use is sims; cars, planes, spaceships all play to its strengths.
It's still early days. Devs are still learning what works and what doesn't and the technology is still limited.

I got the deluxe audio strap for Christmas, which is a decent upgrade but not one that would have been worth £100 of my own money! Nice as a gift though and makes the process much less of a faff because of the built in headphones (which are very good btw). The whole unit feels a bit less 'front heavy' now and sits a bit more comfortably overall.
I'm much more interested in the wireless connectivity than the improved visuals at this stage. I don't feel that I use my Vive enough currently to justify what I am sure will be an expensive HMD upgrade!

Did they try Onward? Its basically Call of Duty in VR.Boys thought it was the best thing since sliced bread on day one. couldn't get them off it and we were taking it in turns to play. Pavlov VR is similar but not as good.

Yep sorry tried onward, liked it for a bit but they didn't like the forward movement with I have to say was a negative feature of most VR games.Pavlov VR is similar but not as good.
They seems to separate into bunny hoping or skateboard sliding but feeling you were about to fall forwards
better was the PUBG lookalike which the youngest liked best for the realistic loading and cocking of the guns and the grenade throwing involved.
Ultimately though neither found it as engaging as playing with a mouse and keyboard looking at a screen. I thin kits something about the young that they can suspend reality while playing screen games and their better reaction speeds shine in keyboard mouse games but are somewhat thwarted by the clunky VR. I count myself as an older player who finds VR more engaging but not for games
Personally I would have kept the Vive for myself if it had simply been able to interact with a program like solidworks perhaps the next generation
I have terrible FPS in my vive.. anyone got any hot tips on improving it? I average around 60-70 with Assetto Corsa, about 65-75 with iRacing and 40 with PCARS2.. all on medium-ish settings
My spec:
i7 2600k, 1070ti, 8gb ram, SSD..
Nothing overheating or running weird - latest drivers and windows updates. Reinstalled windows a week ago and made no difference.

Spent some time in non-racing things this evening and it seems OK for that. Rick and morty, job sim, echo arena, robo recall etc - not too bad. Fallout VR sucked big time (FPS wise).
Assetto is playable and I've been doing just that, but it's a little disappointing, especially with the Vive Pro and other higher res HMD's just around the corner.

The 'K' CPU variants have unlocked multipliers I believe? The i processors seem to overclock very well, you may find with sim games it's the CPU that's bottlenecking, a large grid in Assetto Corsa for example means a LOT of physics calculations are going on.Assetto is playable and I've been doing just that, but it's a little disappointing, especially with the Vive Pro and other higher res HMD's just around the corner.
I have an i5 6600K (or 6700K, I can't remember) which I overclocked from 3.4 to 4.5Ghz for just this reason, larger grids are much more manageable now.
I've only got a 970GTX and tend to leave most settings on high. I only get 45fps in AC, but don't get any motion sickness (especially now with 'lock camera to horizon' on) so it hasn't bothered me. I do get some slowdown with some mod cars / tracks with large grids though, but seem to have a strong stomach for it now!
Since getting the Oculus I've enjoyed a lot of the VR games for a while as julian64 said, but as sim racing was always the intended use, I've had a lot of use out of it and absolutely love it, I've not used the monitor since.
Just for completeness I have a 6800K clocked at 4.8gh, (bought from overclockers as a special), and a 980ti. Everything was as smooth as silk in VR.
Need the high Gh because it greatly benefits games such as rfactor and project cars and especially FSX.
I have no figures but I would heartily recommend older tech running higher Ghz than newer running less. It has always been a disappointment to me when I've tried newer standard tech.

Just rebuilt my other PC - windows 10, I5-6600k (stock), same 1070ti, 16gb ram... same stty framerates in racing games.
perhaps I'm just sensitive to it. It's playable but.. not nice?
Are you running mirror and can you run task manager and look at CPU load and GPU load and post results.perhaps I'm just sensitive to it. It's playable but.. not nice?
with PCARS and Assetto it runs on the desktop too (and at a low-ish res for PCARS), but not with rF2. I'll check the loads later when I give it another go.
Had a good (but low FPS..) race in rF2 last night.. dubai at night with 25 cars.. fun.
Normal games do seem to run fine which is annoying - spent a long time in Rick and Morty last night without any glitches or framerate issues.

I overclocked my 3.5ghz 6600k to 4.3ghz, and it made very little difference, if any.
I don't really know how to see current loads, but max loads for GPU and CPU when in a couple of games..
rFactor2:
CPU: 67.6%
GPU: 76%
CPU Temp (Max): 56
GPU Temp (Max): 83
Assetto Corsa:
Average FPS: 60
CPU: 97%
GPU: 99%

PCARS2:
Average FPS: 50 (day) 30 (night)
CPU: 84%
GPU: 100%
CPU Temp (Max): 57
GPU Temp (Max): 83
