I agree, Supercell want us to dig deep and pay for week long shields to drum up / protect loot enough to upgrade; however, like many I refuse to part with my hard earned simply because the game designer has manipulated the game to suggest I do so.
For now, or until another update hits it's attention walls.
I've given up since the update. Had a th10 with everything maxed apart from walls, heroes and few troops/spells. I'm not so active in Pharmingtwo recently, but looking at the donations a lot of folk seem to be enjoying it again. My phone got bust the other day so I bought a cheap one to keep me going. Got a "this app isn't available on your phone version" or something and wasn't offended in the slightest (although after an update it does appear I can download it).

Get it installed on your Mac or laptop. I use bluestacks to play it on Mac. Also Clash Royale is now available on the UK app stores. When you get to rank 3 you can join a clan, search Pistonheads and put Pher in your application.
I am finding it quite good fun once I have got my head round the initial tactics. Also you can have friendly matches within your clan which is a different dimension to clash of clans!
