Digital Foundry did a live stream chat tonight. Towards the end they were talking about PS5 and the teardown video. They haven't had any hands on with a PS5, but from the video they think the size of the unit is to space out the main heat producing parts on the boards from each other.

Sony have done their own PS5 teardown video
Christ, I’ve only just realised the size of the ps5,
Yeah that guy in the video is like 2 and 1/4 PS5's tall.

Hopefully aftermarket or official shell replacements will come soon after, would prefer a full black console to blend in with everything else a bit better. Least I know I could always paint it relatively easy if it came to that though.

Did you put subtitles on? The engineer says it was a deliberate decision. It means its quieter and has better performance.
More volume to dissipate heat?
naturally.
- 1/3 of the inside is taken up by that fan
- a huge chunk is the heatsink that is also a vapour chamber
- he made a big deal about mentioning the thermal paste used for longevity.
- pointed out the dust vents so people could easily clean their console without having to go deep and voiding the warranty

sounds to me like they really want the early consoles to last, historically these have bricked after a couple of years or gotten insanely loud. my PS4 is like a jet engine playing FF7r

The PS5 isn't that much bigger than the X Box X and its thinner and more stylish. Microsoft have gone for wider and Sony for slimmer. So they had to make it taller to increase the volume inside for spacing as you say.

Without seeing a teardown of the X Box X, you would guess it took Sony a lot longer to design the internals of the Ps5 than a basic PC Case shaped Xbox. And all they get is grief hehe

It's quite a lot 'bigger' - just narrower, but taller and deeper. Probably easier to slot into an existing home entertainment setup though, as long as you don't want to stack anything on top of it.

The Xbox is simple but unoffensive, quite minimal. The PS5 is more contrived and a case of love it or hate it and I don't think it will age well. They had it right with the previous gen PS4/Pro - blocky but unobtrusive.

Your question was already answered on the other thread, why are you spamming these threads?

Burning a hand on a plastic console? Sounds like bks to me.

As if Microsoft wouldn’t have noticed before now.

I’m not - size of PS5 flagged as being huge was / is due to a massive fan so no hot running issue whereas series x possibly isn’t.

You are, your questions have been answered and no one bit so you thought you'd bring it over to this thread and try and kick things off here, it's odd and pathetic

What are you talking about?
The video says the headlines about 'burning hands' on the console is rubbish. IT DID NOT HAPPEN. Have you watched it?
Why are you asking about it in the PS5 thread?

It says the journalist didn’t burn his hand (which a clip to show what happened). They removed an internal component, and it was hot - this is clearly not the same as burning a hand on the case.

As for pushing out a fair bit of heat - I’d expect both consoles to do this. They’re going to be reasonably powerful and will get warm as a result.
