New PC racing sim - Assetto Corsa
Discussion
So I cannot for the life of me make it around the Ring on a regular basis - seriously, I've only managed about four clean laps in maybe a hundred attempts - but I've gone back to basics, and trying to learn something using the Abarth 500 at Vallelunga Club again.
I watched the oft-recommended Skip Barber's 'Going Faster', and that helped me focus on a few things, as did driving it with a following camera and watching my lines. Also watching some YouTube laps to see where people were doing something drastically different.
I've now managed to get within 3.5% of the record, and beat the median time, so there is hope, and I think there's more in it
How easy this will be to transfer to faster cars and more complex laps though, I don't know.

Imagine you'll pay £5000+ or so if you fall off, then try it again.I watched the oft-recommended Skip Barber's 'Going Faster', and that helped me focus on a few things, as did driving it with a following camera and watching my lines. Your lap time will probably be low, but you won't fall off
Dug my old wheel out to give this another go and I have to say I'm not a big fan. The graphics are actually quite poor for a 2014/2015 game. More positively the the Yellow Bird at Mugello is a lot of fun with TC off - although awful under braking.
I certainly won't be paying another tenner for an extra track and some un-interesting cars.
Will have to wait and see what Project CARS delivers.

The graphics are a bit limited in my view too.I certainly won't be paying another tenner for an extra track and some un-interesting cars.

They've aimed kinda last generation which does show. The assets themselves seem nice, but the shading feels a bit wooden for want of a better word. Again, perfectly fine for pro-sim users, but for gamers who are used to seeing Forza and pCars then it does seem limited in sparkle.
Now that V1 is out I can't see too many big changes either... which is the sad part, because iterative updates in this area would have been nice to see over the coming years... but again I'm struggling to see if they won't just cash in on DLC now, and stop bothering with significant post V1 engine updates
I was watching some pCars videos the other day and it does look visually stunning. I also like the range of UK tracks and also plenty of roads to drive on too. So we have a bunch of road cars and actual roads to enjoy them on rather than circuits.
But I'd really want to try a free demo to see how it feels and drives. I'm pretty much fed up of paying for stuff to try it these days.

Totally off-topic, there was a nice surprise for steam owners of the original dirt 3. They've now removed games for windows live and as a thankyou for waiting have gifted ALL the DLC. I bought this game last year for a couple of quid in a steam sale and hated it due to that fact it seemed to be aimed at teenage max power fans. BUT the monte-carlo DLC is superb and great fun when driving a Mk2 Escort or Stratos.

I won't be pre-ordering p CARS either.

It seems that if it goes on there, it'll end up in a sale at some point.
Probably worth waiting till the hype dies down, then if it's any good buy it discounted.
I'm still frustrated I paid more to own AC earlier, vs sale buyers later... even though it's still not properly finished, it's rather galling.
No doubt in 6 months there will be a sale including DLC too... kicking early adopters even more in the nads.
It puts you off pre-order or early purchases full stop these days.

That's because of the linearity of the pedal with no 'feel'.
I'd highly recommend changing the brake spring of a Nixim spring.
Well worth shelling out for!

Are there no in game settings to tweak though? In GTR:Evolution I can adjust the brake sensitivity so that the pedal had to be full depressed to get full braking.
Sadly, no - and it's a really stupid omission.I went for the GTEye mod and then be very careful with Brake Gamma settings and Brake Bias in the car set up.
Some of the cars are ok - others almost undrivable, such as the Formula Abarth.
A question for owners of the T300rs wheel on Assetto Corsa.
The default settings for the t300rs leave a lot to be desired on project cars, does Assetto Corsa have good setups for each car already mapped?
Or do you have trawl through dozens of 'I haven't got a clue' complicated settings like you do with Project Cars?
