Talking of that, I reached the end of Links Awakening last night; a game I’d not touched since buying the original as a 9 year old in 1993. Really good fun, and a satisfying blend of old and new.

Dipped into BOTW which appears to be on a truly gargantuous map. Might take quite a while to reach the end…

I did the same - tbh I prefer the old SNES games for sitting on a plane or airport.

BOTW is a bit overwhelming for a part time gamer!

Currently playing through Sonic Frontiers as my son had completed it, wouldn't have purchased it myself and the reviews aren't great for the Switch, but I'm hooked, really good game. It doesn't half eat the battery though and heat up the Switch!

I'm also 14 hours in on Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which is a great game.

Recently completed Wolfenstein, really enjoyed that.

I've only had an hour or 2 at it so far, but it is drawing me back in. I probably wouldn't play it out and about as a "casual" game, it's better to sit down with once everyone else is in bed and enjoy it undisturbed.

...and one of my joy cons has gone drift crazy again.

While easy to send off and get repaired, it's pretty frustrating and I've no idea how it keeps happening!

I had this problem drift was really annoying, my poor son had been playing Fortnight for months with a massive issue and just got on with it, bless him. I got fed up with buying fixing kits to repair them, fiddly job but did the trick for a while. So I bought a couple of Microsoft controllers, they have lasted without issue really well(2 yrs?), pity they can't attach to the unit though.

Hi all,

I’m currently playing Assassins Creed 4, Black Flag.

I was utterly loving this game, I’ve not got so engrossed in a game for years. But for the last few months I’ve been completely stuck on the boats. I’ve got to escape the enemies, but there’s loads of them and I simply cannot sink anyone’s ships! I’ve no idea what I’m meant to do, so all I get is people shouting “incoming fire!” for two minutes until I either die, or desync because I’m out of bounds.

I’m only 5% of the way through the game and I’ve been on this for months. It’s totally ruined it for me to be honest as I can’t get past it, so only pick it up occasionally, play for a few minutes, get pissed off and put it back on the shelf. Literally making zero progress ever. I don’t want to start a new game at the beginning as I’ll have to go through this bit again eventually anyway.

Anyone got any tips? I must be missing something fundamental as it can’t possibly be this hard, surely?

Thanks!

Stevil

Been a few years since I've played, but from memory you want to get alongside and fire your cannons into the enemy ship from close range, ramming into the side of them works well too. Hit and run tactics are the order of the day, so maintain your speed. Found the ship battles to be one of the most enjoyable parts of it in the end.

Have a nose through this:

thanks Stevil - I'll keep trying. Getting a (tiny tiny) bit better, will read the guide as well and see if it helps.

Appreciate the link, thankyou!

Our boys have asked for a switch for Xmas, assume black Friday is as good a day as any to buy one...

What sorta price are they going for when on 'offer'?

Any ideas what game/s they are after? Bundles usually end up being the best bet.

The OLED model has a better screen and stand, £290ish is a good price at the moment, lower than that and you're doing really well. I think it's hit £265ish once or twice but that may be a stretch as Christmas approaches.

For a non OLED I'd be aiming for around £200 without a game around Black Friday, nothing quite that low at the moment, £240 seems to be the lowest.

Mario Kart is what they play at their cousins.

The oldest has also taken to watching some sort of Mario Party game on YouTube, but I think that might be on the Wii?

It wouldn't hurt if I had to get one with a game I could play too

If you've not ordered from Very before, you can get 20% off your first credit account, just pay it off straight away. I did this and picked up a Switch Oled for £240, I doubt you'll find one cheaper brand new even during Black Friday.

There's also a Switch version, which in turn includes all of the mini games from older versions.

We have this, and whilst hilarious does end up in a few controller-throwing moments rofl

Winning is usually more luck than judgement.

Tried doing this with 2 OG switches years ago and they classed gaming in a way that ruled it out from the 20% off. Ended up sending one back because of it as I was gonna try flogging it.

I remember playing Super Mario bros on my NES when i was a kid (the one where you bump the stones for coins and mushrooms, and the green pipes). What game is similar for the Switch that I can get?

I'm a winter only gamer but managed to complete BOTW (main and side quests) last year before the clocks changed, it's a lovely game to play with loads of stuff to do...just started Tears of the Kingdom last weekend; more of the same except Link has a funky alien arm, highly recommended smile

Had an Amazon voucher so bought a years Nintendo Online + Expansion pack to play some N64 games. Goldeneye was all but unplayable using the Switch controls. I suspect you need the pricey N64 controller. Grumpy. grumpy

Mario Wonder has just come out and is old-school 2D Mario, I'm enjoying it a lot. Or the New Super Mario Brothers U (ported from the Wii U) is also 2D.

As said, a lot of the classic ones are playable via the online service.
