I remember playing Super Mario bros on my NES when i was a kid (the one where you bump the stones for coins and mushrooms, and the green pipes). What game is similar for the Switch that I can get?
New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe or Super Mario Bros Wonder, both 2D platformers.

Mario Bros Wonder has got amazing reviews across the board, I'm gutted that it's on my sons Christmas list so I have to wait!

I'm a winter only gamer but managed to complete BOTW (main and side quests) last year before the clocks changed, it's a lovely game to play with loads of stuff to do...just started Tears of the Kingdom last weekend; more of the same except Link has a funky alien arm, highly recommended smile
I estimate I'm a third of the way through BOTW, and very much enjoying it. Think I'll step away from the main story for a bit and get some more exploring and side quests in. Going to have my money out of this first but will certainly be playing TOTK in due course.

Tried doing this with 2 OG switches years ago and they classed gaming in a way that ruled it out from the 20% off. Ended up sending one back because of it as I was gonna try flogging it.
Might have not worked then, works now though, or it did July this year anyway! I opened a credit account, received a discount code, paid off the credit the day it arrived.

There are a couple of additional quests once you have completed the main BotW storyline you can download too...great fun to romp around the map with all Links toys at full strength.

I'd not seen those before; I'm nowhere near finishing but certainly up for some more once I have!

Mario Kart is what they play at their cousins.

The oldest has also taken to watching some sort of Mario Party game on YouTube, but I think that might be on the Wii?

It wouldn't hurt if I had to get one with a game I could play too
Switch OLED Mario Kart edition just announced for Black Friday, so expect to see some deals on those soon.

Played through some great games recently:-

Guacamelee (1 & 2)
Beneath A Steel Sky
Mario 3d World
Starfox for a tenner is a steal
Tetris 99 is brilliant, managed to win once
Rocket League is fun
Fifa 24 plays well now after a few updates

Just pre-ordered Outer Wilds as it's 20% off pre-order, released 7th December, know nothing about it other than it's meant to be utterly brilliant and best played blind.

Better keeping an eye here for deals -> https://www.hotukdeals.com/search?q=nintendo%20swi...

£260 for OLED Mario Edition recently, doubt you'll see anything cheaper on Black Friday.

I'm in real danger of wanting/buying more games to play than I'll ever have time to play.

Having had quite a few years out of gaming I'd never heard of this, but the concept sounds really interesting.

Against all the odds, the technical breakdowns of Hogwarts Legacy released so far show it's perfectly playable and actually pretty decent. Loading times to enter buildings so not true open world, but otherwise it's another miracle port for the Switch.

Any more views or any PH’er experience with the Switch port? I’m torn between getting this for the kids on the switch or stick it on my PS5 for the more enjoyable graphics.

It's not out yet so probably little in the way of user reviews, but here is an excellent technical breakdown: https://youtu.be/iXahPAYjbzw?si=fXwwuHhFKzMYqPIh

Seems to be good enough that the convenience of playing handheld outweighs any significant concerns, so we will be going with the Switch as I know my son will play it death on there.

I've got it on mine as I've modded my Switch and it was leaked early. Very playable and enjoyable. Obvously would be better on the PS5 though. Good game overall.

Thanks all, I’d seen so much about the game recently that I assumed it was out now. I think the easier access via handheld mode probably pips the PS5 graphics from the kids perspective.

For clueless parents and a 5 year old who are considering one of these for some winter family fun, is there anything I should consider when purchasing one? Is there different hardware specs? One that might be future proofed more than others? Suspect it will be used for mario kartd, bowling etc hooked upto the big Tele.

Thanks.

Three versions...

Switch Lite: portable only, can't be connected to the telly

Switch: the standard Switch, fine for kids. Can be played handheld and on the telly.

Switch OLED: same form factor as a regular switch but a better screen, more expensive. Handheld and telly.

For a 5 year old I wouldn't worry about future proofing, the game catalogue is vast and it has at least another year of confirmed new releases already lined up. There is enough for a 5 year old to grow up with and get at least 4 or 5 years out of it (my son is 9 now, been playing it since 5 and slowly working through various games).

A Switch successor is very likely to arrive next year but it'll probably be quite some time before anyone can just buy one, and especially for a youngster I wouldn't worry too much. There are over 130 million Switch's out there now so it will be supported by new games releases etc for a long time yet.

Connect to telly is super important.

It makes the games family events and adds so much to the experience.

My own (nearly) 5 year old finds a 'proper' controller easier than the joycons. There are lots of on the market that aren't expensive.
