As for home computing I had a Spectrum 48k - Manic Miner, Sabre Wulf, Knight Lore, Green Beret...if I reeled off my favourite games ever, I would be here all night!

...Was there a better coin-op video game in the early 80's?

Many, many quality coin-ops from the early 80s (Although Asteroids was around in 1979!!)

Defender
Tempest
Robotron 2084
(In fact, nearly anything that Williams Electronics made!)
Mr Do!
Amidar
The original "Sit down" Star Wars game

And many, many more.......

I hope you all know about MAME (www.mame.net) which lets you play 1000's of old arcade games from the 70's 80's and 90's (including joust).

You can download the game roms from alt.binaries.emulators.mame or BitTorrent.
