How are you all doing with this? I've had one lucky run up to level 27 iirc. Most others either end 12 to 15 or the occasional 22.
Have any of you really managed to make serious progress and if so, what starting character do you use and what location?
My latest lazy solution is to start with the character that has lightening and stand entirely still, make sure and not collect any blue gems and the starting level 1 buff to your lightening will kill around 450 enemies without you even having reached level 1 at which point eventually you cannot dodge collecting the blue gems dropped right on your characters head and you reach level 2 and lose your starting mega lightning bonus. SO then you quickly run round a circle the size of the screen perimeter and are about level 6 in 1 min and next to no effort.

Nice - I agree the garlic is really good at splatting low level enemies such as the bats.
If you try the lightening strat that I put up above that gets around 450 deaths before you have even collected a gem. Just stand still at the start or move a very small amount to dodge a close enemy and dodge the gem they drop. After that you will get several levels from the gems laying all aound you and you can upgrade to garlic if that is your proffered choice.
When you say you got to 30 mins, that must be quite a high level? I just measure the levels not the time, but I'll check the time next go.
Man this game is one that makes you say one more at 3am haha.

I'm pretty much done with it after 46hrs of playtime. There are some secrets I've not yet unlocked, but have all the achievements for it. As with the garlic, I found the bibles a good weapon along with the axes if you can get them to their max level and combined with their counterpart. That any of those gives you a good localised defence platform to build off and add in your favourite ranged weapons of choice.
I found the library the best area for farming in the early stages as the enemies seem to come in nicer waves that let you build up your weapons in good time. I avoid collecting the extra items on that level early on though so as not to take up a valuable slot for a level up choice reward.
Good fun for a relatively simple idea.

It's all about picking the right weapons and evolving them. Once you do that, you'll be getting to 30mins every time and eventually beyond. The core game mechanic is about 'becoming the bullet hell' for your enemies. Then the real meat of the game becomes getting the various unlocks for characters and weapons.Have any of you really managed to make serious progress and if so, what starting character do you use and what location?

My fave weapon to get is the bibles - when you power them up they become effective as a defense and attack, and evolving makes them even more powerful.
Santa water is especially effective as a defense when evolved.
Just check out the various YT videos to get a good idea of how you need to play ('Never Nathaniel' makes some good ones to watch and does a few specific tutorials). You'll see just how overpowered you can get - it's pretty impressive to see the Phieraggi fully powered with speed and size, with Unholy Vespers and La Borra protecting you and Death Spiral whoosing out to scythe down enemies.
I've put 79 hours into the game according to Steam and unlocked everything (unless there has been new stuff recently, haven't checked). It's definitely worth the paltry amount of money being asked and has staying power for many tens of hours of gameplay. Also runs really great on a Steamdeck.
I made it to the point where I could comfortably get to 30 mins every time. I saw videos of builds that could beat Death when he appears but never bothered grinding it myself. Once the game got really grindy I jacked it in, certainly had a good bit of fun considering I paid less than £2 for it.

30 mins because the level effectively ends there as death arrives and kills you. There is a way to beat death but I think something unkillable appears after that to end things. Generally I'm in the 90's level wise at that point but I've got into the 100's a couple of times.
I decided to try the library level. I managed to get to 29:59 seconds at level at level 76. I feel a bit memed when i died 1 seconds before death was going to appear. I had level 8 for Garlic, Magic Wand, Lightning Ring (2m damage!), Runtracer, King Bible (it did 880k damage).
I just got the upgrade path going well.
Tell me, the bonus stuff that you spend your gold on at the home menu. That appears to give your character buffs that they take into every game therefore making it easier as a whole. Is that right? So essentially it is a grind fest to get these bonus unlocks which then help you get further which in turn allows you to earn more gold for unlocks?

You can use clock lancet and laurel to survive past the Reaper appearing to minute 31 no problems. Levelled up clock lancet will freeze the reaper if it hits it and levelled laurel will shield you even when he homes in on you, letting you freeze him and move away. Evolved clock lancet with evolved laurel is even better. Together they will let you get to minute 31 where there is an unlock (on every map).Generally I'm in the 90's level wise at that point but I've got into the 100's a couple of times.
Also, once you unlock the Arcanas you can add some really powerful buffs which help power you up even beyond max weapon evolves ...
... If you are powered up enough, you can just about kill the first reaper before you get totally overwhelmed with new ones (a new one that is exponentially more powerful than the last one is generated every minute after 30min and you aren't going to be able to beat those).
Just necro-ing this (hah)!
I somehow missed this when it came out and stumbled onto it the other day on Game Pass. The damn thing is digital crack!
At first I was just messing with it for a bit at a time while a main game was downloading or similar but this weekend I found a groove with it and discovered the powered up weapons and how that mechanic worked along with the map feature etc and realised how much more nuanced the game really is.
I now hit 30 mins most games but am still experimenting with weapon combos to try to unlock some of the other evolved weapons.
If (like me) you've not yet played it, it's on gamepass or costs about £3 on steam - the best value game around!

What a game. Addictive and very hard to put down!!
agree - played it tonnes. Tried different characters and tried different weapons for slightly different builds. Eventually had enough and could put it down but it was something like 53 hours play time all in. For me it was top notch on the steam deck tooI too discovered this while randomly downloading stuff before my GamePass ran out....and ended up buying it on Steam for £3.
It's insanely additctive, but I don't know why. I've played similar games (Brotato) briefly that have never really captured my attention, but this is now my go-to 20 minute game, and has been for a while. Just working through the rest of the unlocks, then will move onto the DLC.
