Have now played Rome and all of the various mods to death – is there any other game I could buy that comes close to the experience of the Rome game? I love the fact that I can take my turn, sort everything out whilst everything is stopped, and click the end of year turn button, to see what I have done (or haven’t!).
I had a go at a demo of Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, but tbh, playing Cleopatra was like playing a PS one game 10 years ago, where one sword swipe would kill a dozen enemies instantly – not very challenging, and not the kind of game I want to play – I want something like Rome, but not Rome, I love the fact that its turned based, not RTS, gives me chance to think about the next move…..any ideas?

Cheers

They are releasing TotalWar Medieval 2, soon (well I don't know how soon) but it's the old Medieval Version of Rome using all of the newer Rome systems plus more

Plus you can still get the original Medieval + the Vikings add-ons probably for only £10 or less these days, not as good as Rome graphically but the gameplay is still the same. Before that they did Shogun same gameplay (even cheaper to buy).

, have already pre-ordered that one, that is going to stunning! I know a downloadable only expansion is due soon for Rome; Alexander - I think the Creative Assembly have this turn based game thing licked!
Wonder what Civ City - Rome will be like..........

Edited to add - yes, I have also played Medievil and the Viking invasion games to death too - I can't seem to get enough of this type of game!

In that case................er, no I know of no others as I'd probably have it as well

I think anything else would be a disappointment if it wasn't a complete carbon copy of the TotalWar system.

Thats what I concluded too, I just thought I'd double check on here, just to be sure I wasn't missing out on anything else that may be stunning - Rome has raised the game to a too higher standard, I fear!

You need to try civilisation 4.

It's a bit like Rome: TW but on a grander scale.

(start 4000BC work through to 2000AD), it's turn based and it has economic and military bits.

I don't like turn based battle games, Rome and it's predecesors use a realtime battle engine. You control the battle as it happends and as it might have happened for real.

It's what was used on the TV program Time Commanders

Yes, the real time battles are great, I have seen nothing better, I also like the turn based part when not fighting, and the fact you can auto resolve battles if you can't be arsed (especially if you know you're gonna win - 1500 men against 280 rebels, for example)
Civ 4 sounds OK, but have seen very mixed reviews, may be worth a go though...

I like the odds against me sometimes

My victory playing 800 Cartheginians against almost twice as many Romans.

My victory with 1200 Romans against 3300 Britons (not the hardest though but look at the kills)

excellent, darren, no better feeling in this game than winning a very hard fought battle against the odds - I have found that with the gauls and similar barbaric factions, if you throw all or most of your units into trying to kill the warlord and his bodygaurd, and succeeed, the rest can be routed pretty easily - its those types of battles that you don't want to auto resolve!

I have, I have played the Total Realism mod, the TE mod, and am now just completing the SPQR mod (too easy, all recruiting takes one turn only, meaning you have a full army in 2 turns – loads of cool battles though, which is why I persevered)

Cheers for the links though, very thoughtful

Civ 4 is a good game. But I cannot help feel that the Total War series has made such games obsolete. I couldn't go back to resolving combat through hitpoints etc after commanding armies.

Not sure.

Rome:TW is just a finer grained version of civilisation games: you control your "people" over a shorter time period and in more depth... whereas in civ games you play over a longer time period, with less detailed tactical fights but maybe the game has a bit more strategy to it... Ok so you don't fight individual battles but there are several ways to win in Civ 4 (dominant culture, for example).

They are different takes on the same sort of thing.
