Hey, Im a long time pistonheads lurker, and thought something that me and my mate are working on might interest you guys.

Is pretty much a car company running game, along the lines of "Detroit" and "Car Tycoon" and stuff like that, only more targeted at proper car nerds who want to build their own engines and such.

www.automationgame.com is our website, and I would love anyone who is interested to join the forums, give us a bunch of suggestions of what you'd like to see in the game, tell us how much we suck etc smile

Mods: This isn't intended as advertising, we aren't selling anything yet, though if we end up making something really splinky we might sell it in the end, more just want people to check out our project and offer some feedback, but feel free to remove this post if I have done wrong!

Ah detroit.. I remember that game.

I remember the revelation I had - I was barely keeping up with competitors despite my cars being much better. Then I looked at comparative prices and realised my cars were about 1/5th the price. Massive price increase overnight and presto I was rich.

when you say design engines? how so?

do you pick a block, then a camshaft etc? or do you design the components??

Sort of like that, picking from a range of different parts, but also specifying capacity, how wild the cams are, if its tuned for emissions or power.

Might be worth having a look at the video on the website, that has my programmer mate explaining broadly how it works.

Obviously there will be more to the game, designing and testing cars, marketing and market research, expanding into new markets all that sort of thing, it will be along the lines of the typical "Tycoon Genre" game.

Well, keep an eye out, we aim to have just a little demo of the engine designer to play with done in a few months, the finished game is most likely at least a year away though, but know people are interested is motivating! smile

Also interested.

The Modelling looks fairly good, may I as what program you're designing the models in?

The 'issues' with detroit is one of the big motivations behind this game, we have a pretty clever buyer system that should make people make good choices, buyers will compare what most fits their needs, and compare prices etc, different countries will have different demographics (that change over time), they'll also have local preferences, like American sports car buyers will prefer muscle cars more often and so on.

We still have a lot of tweaking to make that bit work yet though, its a slow complex process making a game like this! biggrin

Worth taking another look

We just posted some more splinky screenshots of things last night including some slightly pretty user interface.

This looks brilliant!

How much of the overall design of the cars will be player created? I mean are you using several standard bodies and a load of options, or is it completely user created?

Most likely the system we will settle on is starting with a load of basic template bodies, then you'll have a bunch of controls and tools to modify the shape, plus a load of headlights, flares, spoilers etc etc, basically as much control as we can make work well.

@shinobi - If all goes well then about a year, its a big project!

But tell your friends, the more people are interested the more motivated/guilty we feel and the harder we work biggrin

If you mean the weight of the car, that'll be determined from the weight of the engine, suspension, interior parts etc, plus how large the car is, the chassis type, the materials used to build it etc smile

good.

universal floorplans like VW use would be good if possible, so you can have a hatch/saloon/estate/van all based on the same floor.

Yep, you can build a platform, which basically consists of chassis type and size, engine placement and suspension type, then you can build multiple models from that

nice one!

can you have a "family face" where your models on different platforms share similar looks?

Well you'll have a big range of grilles and headlights etc to choose from, so by using the same ones across the range, that'd be pretty easy to do, same with any styling feature I suppose
