Wii or 360

I'm going to treat myself to a games console over the christmas period. Question is though, which one of the above?

I'm fairly casual about gaming, just now and then play.

360:
pros - xbox live, Hi-def capability, established catalogue of games
cons - more expensive so harder to justify as a casual toy

Wii
pros - cheaper, innovative controller, "fun" element of ninty games
cons - lack of xbox live type service, possible lack of quality games available on other platforms, gimicky nature of controller

What should I do?

If you only have xbox live silver do you need to pay extra to do onlne gaming on the likes of COD3?

I keep thinking I want a Wii, but Xbox live keeps pulling me back to the 360.

If i were to go the 360 route what is *needed* and what is not.

Hard disk? Is this important? If not I think i could cope with a wired controller and just get the core system and add xbox live (do you really need the headset for this?)

It starts to get expensive if you go premium and wii starts to look better
