Voice for online games?

Something I miss from the Xbox is the use of voice in PC games.

If myself and a friend just want to be able to talk via out headset in GT Legends or rFactor etc can we just use a simple program like MSN or skype running in the background?

Whats better about the game orientated services like Teamspeak etc?

What if any do other PHers use?

I istalled Skype, just playing around with the settings now as its all a bit too quiet.....
