Right, decision time.

Star wars galaxies seems to be edging the others out at the moment. Anarchy online very nearly won but cant get the free download to work.

Anyone out there playing it? Have any views?

After a mammoth mission through every computer games shop in milton keynes, I now have my very own copy of SWG.

So, if anyone fancies crushing the rebellion I will be saving up for my very own set of stormtrooper armour after Ive managed to install it.

Now if FFXI were out would be a different story. But it isnt, so till then *cue imperial march*.

I usually play on Tarquinas, one of the US servers - character's name is Aiki. Give me a shout if you're ever on there and we can go bullseye some womp rats I'm still a relative beginner, so I won't be able to shower you with riches I'm afraid.

The Prima strategy guide is a pretty good introduction to the game. As with this type of guidebook, some of the information is now out of date and obviously newer stuff about vehicles won't be there, but it's still worth having. Amazon details here

If you're interested in becomming a Jedi, now is a good time to join the game as they will be giving out Holocrons as xmas pressies to every player. Holocron's are the items that tell you what professions you should be pursuing to open your Jedi character slot. They have also been changing hands for silly amounts of money - about 3 million credits a piece! But the market price will undoubtedly plummet once everyone gets their freebie.

Some useful sites:
SWG Warcry
SWG Stratics
Allakhazam

Crashed mid-install, wont reinstall or add/remove the poxing program... grrrr *deep breaths*

Free holocrons for Xmas? And there was me thinking SOE never gave anyone anything for free... *cynic mode from EQ*

Is there a subscription fee for SWG or a cheapo through the pub toilet window back door in?

$14.99 per month plus VAT. Run by the same people who've run EQ for years, as a result I would be amazed if there were a way round it. Does come with a gratis month when you buy the game though.

Sloooowly patching the updates, looks like about a half hour.

Time to get some lunch, then perch in front of the PC for the day.

Lemme see vital supplies:

Red-Bull
Multipack of cigs
Big pack of Crisps for emergency munchies

Yep all present and correct. Damn catheter... forgot the catheter....

As we havent got it on release in the UK, wouldnt know!

Does sound pretty good though.

On the other hand SWG is a LOT better than I expected. Makes EQ look like its from the dark ages. Graphics are better, user interface is better, gameplay seems a lot more fun...

The sheer variety of character career options is staggering, from solid crafters and builders to the shoot em up guys - or hybrids of them. Doesnt look like you can play effectively without a heavily hybridised character.

Oh and you cant discount how cool it is to shoot things with blasters

If ayone else decides to give it a go and is around Bestine on the server mentioned above, Ive got enough gear now to help out new starters.

Bad news on the Holocron front - just saw this posted on the Stratics site:

SWG Stratics said:
Holiday gifts: All characters that are at least 3 weeks old will receive a holiday present. To prevent abuse, newly created characters will not receive the free gift.

That's a bit of an arse if you've just got the game

To prevent abuse?

That was one of my incentives for getting the damn thing before christmas.....

I fancy getting a game like this, what do you actually do in it? What are the objectives etc?

John,
The objective is.... whatever you wish it to be. Depending on the game, the scope can be monstrously huge.

For example SWG allows you to build characters ranging from warriors (blasters, fists, swords, axes etc etc all different skill trees) to the architects who build cities, the merchants who create and sell goods and factories and even.... wait for it...

Hairdressers. (hey gotta go with this seasons look)

Simply put, if you enjoy the classic RPG style games (Baldurs gate style) then you will probably love the online games.

The addition of lots of people makes a big difference, you can chat, trade for items you cant get, recieve and give help (or grief).

Let me give you a little example of a snapshot. Played for most of yesterday afternoon on SWG. Went hunting wildlife, took part in some unofficial swoop bike races organised by another player, spent some time building trade items, had a tourist moment and wandered around somewhere new to get my bearings and then hunted down rebels for a while.

In most games, what you do is utterly up to you (but often involves repeatedly killing the bad guys ad infinitum).
