Well as far a camera's go.

I picked up a Canon 350D yesterday from a well known photography chain.

Price matched it too,

£627 for Camera and 18-55mm E-FS II
£159 for a Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro
£5 for a Hoya polariser (something to experiment with)

Total £791.

Now how do I use it?

Consult the manual, starting from where it says: 'Thank you for purchasing the Canon 350D...'

General rule of thumb - holding camera with lump on top, point glass bit towards subject and press button to right of top lump.

Have a nice Sunday playing

I don't know how much this matters or if I've done a good comparison test, but after seeing dcw@pr thread on ISO ratings I took these of my back wall (boring I know, but the weather is sh1t today):

All were taken on 'P' setting at 8mp jpg and cropped. Starting at ISO 100, 200, 400, 800 & 1600.

Cool. Congrats on the equipment purchase.

Looks though like you've got a sharpness problem going on there. The 350D should be able to resolve fantastic sharpness. Did you shoot handheld, by any chance?

Nice choice of camera! Havn't seen one yet but it's got the right badge on the front.

Eh?! It's got an "o", two "n"s and a "d", but the number's all wrong and it's still missing at least two letters.....

Yep, sorry handheld it was.

I will try and post some proper pics soon.

I think you should learn about aperture and shutter speed first, and worry about ISO afterwards. The first two are much more about photography, because they control the picture. Just a tip

Can I ask where it's available for £627? I'm considering one of these and if I could get Park Cameras or Jessops to price match that then it'll save me enough for some more toys!

Absolutely. I didn't mean my post to seem stern, just to point out that in the list of all the things to learn, ISO is well below such basics as shutter speed and aperture. I think ISO gets rather over-done TBH.

It's gone up a little:

www.berridgemail.co.uk/products.php?productId=2076

There are a few places selling 'em at around £635.

eg:
www.cameras2u.com

This is one of the things I love about the PH pohotography forum. It's all about learning, constructive advice and encouragement. I think we are all learning a lot from each other here no matter what level we class ourselves as or what kit we use.

I really look forward to a daily browse here, especially seeing what folks are posting up in the monthly themes.

A big group hug to you all

Chris

Cheers Mark, went into Jessops today and came out with a 350D, 18-55 and 512mb Sandisk Ultra II for £684.98. They had no problems price matching it to cameras2u.com's price which was nice.

First impressions are excellent - it is small but I wanted something I can take hiking with me without taking up too much space or weight, it's fast, especially the autofocus which is much better than my old film 500N. Will have a further play about and see what piccies I can come up with

For the Nikon Clud, I was sorely tempted by the D70 which is a superb camera, but as I've already got a Canon lens or two and filters etc. to fit them the 350D was the better option for me

I think you were probably 1/2 cut when you wrote that, as I was with my post. It's amazing what a big rosy glow you get after a few bevvys.

Martin.

PS - I stand by what I said though.
