Best compact camera - preferably a Leica
Discussion
After considering an entry level DSLR for a little while now, this thread (and other Googlage) has now swayed me toward an RX100.
Has anyone used this site? It's the cheapest I can find it:

Don't forget that there are three generations of RX 100. That is unlikely to be an RX100 III at that price. Has anyone used this site? It's the cheapest I can find it:

Yep, noted, thanks Jon. The RX100 I is more than enough for me, judging by the quality of photo posted here. I'm an absolute beginner, and will only be using the camera for occasional use, so I don't think I need to spend any more.Cheers for the heads up, though.
Well....after lots of thoughts and reviews read I came to the conclusion I really wanted a Leica and a Leica I bought. It the new Leica D Lux Typ 109.
I'm really happy with it. I am still getting used to the camera along with Adobe Lightroom. Here is my Flickr account - I need to go out and take more photographs. Some of the photos are pre-Leica (iPhone) but some are Leica and more will be added soon......

The Sony RX100 in on special at Jessops (although still more than some online people). The III is now £569
Any thoughts on whether this is just an offer or the prelude to a "IV"? I'm tempted to get JL to price match Jessops and get the 2 year warranty but not if prices everywhere are likely to tumble. How long has it been between versions of this camera?
Thanks

It's the same price on Amazon and WEX, they both also list the MK I for £299, and the MK II for £395.Any thoughts on whether this is just an offer or the prelude to a "IV"? Regarding a Mk IV, only speculations out there, with some thoughts being that there could be one mid 2015 and that the major new feature might be 4k video. No hard evidence to support this though ....

Well I bit the bullet as Park Cameras were offering a free Sony case and I was in the area.
Not sure why they've dropped the GPS from cameras, a Sony I had 5 years ago had it, not that I ever used it.
Which one did you get?Not sure why they've dropped the GPS from cameras, a Sony I had 5 years ago had it, not that I ever used it.
I can't make my mind up as to which one to plump for, price not really an issue.
It's between the Mk I and Mk III
Since I already have a Sony HX20V which is a good travel/pocket camera ...... I keep thinking as to whether it would be better to look at A6000 and build up a small travel outfit instead.
By the time I decide, I fully expect the RX100 MK V to be out

We've had a sony DSC-HX5 for years and been happy with it, so I decided to stick with the brand.
I'll be interested to see how you get on with it.

I bought the Canon G7X last night. Amazon's price had dropped to £435 and Canon are currently running a £30 cashback on it, making it £405. I thought that was a good price and went for it.
It's due to arrive tomorrow.

I'm really liking it so far. In auto mode a variable size square locks on to what it thinks is the main subject of the photo and this is the focus point, which then adjusts automatically as it works out how much of the subject to keep in focus. It then automatically switches to what it thinks is the appropriate scene mode - so if it detects a face it will switch to portraiture mode and throw the background into blur. It even has facial recognition and can store up to 12 people, and in group shots will favour those people and prioritise them, making sure they come out the best. It even has blink detection. It's rather too scarily clever for its own good! You can override the auto-selection of the subject with the touch-screen and then as you move the camera around it tracks it. It's a really cool feature.
At 390g it feels a little heavy compared to my old Panasonic DMC-SZ9 but not excessively so.
The only annoyance so far is that it seems that you can only charge the battery off the camera - it seems that not only does it not charge from its USB port when connected to a PC, it actually very quickly drains its battery on file transfers whilst connected. That's a pretty big annoyance. (Edit: Some reviews seem to suggest that it *can* be charged via USB so I'm happy to be corrected. But that was not my experience)
The other annoyance is that there isn't a dedicated wireless remote - you use an app on your smartphone for remote shooting. I would have preferred a system like the one used by the GoPro, which is a choice of a smartphone or a dedicated remote.
I haven't even begun to scratch the surface on its features or capabilities yet, so there is doubtless more to come. Those are my initial thoughts though.

Absolute no-brainer for me given the fast lens, the image quality.
Pointless buying the panasonic equivalent unless you intend to never sell. The Panasonic will be worth a fraction of the Leica in 2-3 years when you want to upgrade.

Someone will have an absolute bargain (in photographic terms) assuming that things have not moved on much in the intervening period.

That's some good man-maths there, but sadly it doesn't hold true. The Panasonic will never fall far enough for the Leica to make up the £250+ difference.Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
