Another Q (sorry).
How long will it record for? Let's say I have a 63GB card and wish to record in 1080p/60, how long will it record? Is there a way I can calculate this?
It might be that 720 is enough for me, and at lower frame rates, as long as it looks sharp and smooth on both a PC screen and 40 inch HD TV. Basically I'm going on a 10-day driving tour. I'd like to be able to mount a camera in the windscreen and **constantly** capture the stream. If there was a way to stream to HDD that would probably be best.
Any ideas anyone?

3 minutes 30 seconds of 1080p/60 is 800mb! A rough calculation means that's about 4.5 hours on a 64gb card. But remember, the battery only lasts about 30-60 minutes recording at that framerate.

The answer is that to charge the battery you need to use the old style battery back pack. Reason being that the batteries themselves have to be put into something to charge, like the camera. The Hero 3 battery back pack can be charged away from the camera, but it's battery is integrated. The hero 1 and 2 back pack can also be charged away from the camera, but the battery isn't integrated. So you can swap them. I believe (but I've written to gopro to check) that the hero 1/2 back packs will still work with the hero 3.
That's exactly what I need to know too. Thanks for this. Please let us know if/when they write back. Thanks again.
In the mean time, I got bored waiting (emailed them 3 days ago!) and found this just now:

It backs up what I suspected, and what I was told by the GoPro rep when I talked to him at Gadget Show Live 2 weeks ago.
It's good news

Well, if possible yes but only during waking hours.Salgar said:

I could leave it permanently connected to the car electrics.4.5 hours on a 64MB would be OK. That would work out about 3 cars per day, and to "empty" the cards in the bar during the evening.

Golly, sounds feasible, I just wonder what you're going to do with the 2 terabytes of video at the end of it all? I've recently realised that taking small snippets of interesting video means I might one day edit it, rather than hours of video that I know i'm never going to edit. But you may be better at editing than I (And have a much faster computer)
I will discard most of it without reviewing it but if anything should happen en route, I'll note the time and date separately and refer to that time and date in the videos when I'm home.Watchman said:

You'd be better off using the remote to record interesting things. It will be too hard to edit 10 days of footage.
His problem will be knowing that something cool is about to happen, hence my idea of the crash cam - because like Sky+ it saves the last bit regardless so you can save it off after something happens.Watchman said:
I want the quality though. Crash cams are not so good, and I want low light capabilities.
And I want a camera to use away from the car too.
Editing 10 days of footage is easy if you know what you're looking for.
The Gopro HD1 is poor in low light, well I thought mine was...And I want a camera to use away from the car too.

The 3 is supposed to be much better, I await conformation (hint hint chaps!).
Kind of curious about this 10 day tour of yours, sounds interesting. Are we likely to see any of the footage?

I've done a few summer tours in Caterhams. I've really enjoyed this type of tour and although I don't rule them out in the future, I am looking towards something a bit different now. It'll be more of an "overland" type of affair with 4x4s and constrained by time. I like testing myself behind the wheel (where I'm at my happiest) so instead of an outright race, I intend for the route to be more difficult to negotiate. The 3 is supposed to be much better, I await conformation (hint hint chaps!).

I'm not even sure there will be much/any footage worth publishing but if you don't have footage in the first place...
The truth is, I'm only considering capturing the tour because the cost of cameras of this high quality has dropped so low. I'm intending to capture the tour not because the tour will be so exciting for others to watch, but because capturing it is so readily affordable.
