If you were going to be short sighted go for the D70 kit that has been recommended here several times. However....... IMHO Canon make the better gear when you go up the scale, so if you think you will get upgradeitis it may be worth going for a 20D now and save yourself te hassle later. I *almost* wish that I was a Canon user on occasion, but don't tell anyone I said so.

As for Fuji, they are great cameras, with one exception. They use a mixture of different batteries, so you have to carry multiple spares with you etc which is a general PITA. This is the only reason I wouldn;t get one over a comparable Nikon.

Neither, the difference isn't actually significant in practical terms.

Ken Rockwell is generally pro-Nikon but this article is brand-neutral: www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

Thats a good article, and there are quite a few other good ones on the site as well. I think he does talk sh**e on occasion though!

Frankly, I have to say that article, and the one in 'Arizona Highways' , is the biggest load of steaming horse cr@p that I've had the misfortune to read.

Parents have just bought me and my brother a 300D each.

Just waiting for the IS 100-400mm lens which the dealers are waiting to receive from Canon.

I agree that Ken can be very opinionated, and you probably view him with scepticism as he's pro-Nikon, but in this instance you can't argue with the maths surely?

Used the 1D quite a lot today. GRRR that bloody green caste still rears its head from time to time. Also its not very good at controlling the flash, but it is a 550EX so maybe it's just not very sophisticated. Same era as my SB-80 which works much better...

I happen to agree with Mr Rockwell on this issue, and it has been backed up by what I have seen in my experience. I seem to remember Bacardi taking issue with this standpoint on another thread? Looks like we will have to agree to disagree.

But have you never used a medium format digital back? The resolution you get off a 3MP digital leaf back is quite stunningly more detailed than the 5.5 from my D1X, the 8 from a 1D MkII or any other DSLR file I have experienced.

You are correct, the Canon flash is rubbish compared to the Nikon....... unless you upgrade to a 1dmkII with the new 580EX which, like the Nikon, takes in to account distance. I believe they have finally got a system which works predictively. About bleedin' time too!

Don't know about green casts. I guess you've tried the different colour matrix settings? Is it worse than the vomit inducing yellows I see on my mates 1dx?

The question in my mind is when is Ken Rockwell going to stop talking about taking great photos and actually do it. Having looked through his gallery, im not very impressed, particularly considering how much he *knows*.

Just IMO, im sure other people love his work...
