If you want mechanical reliability then I'd stay away from Sigma. I've had a couple of their lenses over the last ten years and both have fallen apart. Their APO lenses are excellent optical quality for the price but they're physically a bit fragile.

My favourite lens is the Canon EF 28-135 IS. It's well worth saving up for and the image stabiliser can really improve your photos without the hassle of carrying a tripod around.

At the moment i use the 18-55 EFs lense that came with my digital rebel and a 75-300 usm IS

it leaves a small area between lenses with no cover, but as my photography is mainly motorsport and animals, it doesn't matter that much.

I'll fill in with a 28-105 soon though

I guess you get what you pay for - the Sigma lenses I had on my old Minolta SLR were always reliable, but didn't have the same feel of quality as the Canon ones I now own, but on the other hand they are a lot cheaper!

I can also vouch for the Canon 28-135 IS - it's the lens which is on my camera most of the time, and I'm very impressed with it.

You must get what you pay for (as was previously said).
I currently have a Canon lens and it is awful. The focusing ring is loose and wobbly and manual focusing has now become a bit of a black, and lucky, art!

But the lens is probably near the bottom of the range. I ordered the camera over the phone and requested a different lens to the one that came with which was even worse! Its lasted me a couple of years so I cant complain.

(Whilst on the subject is it lens or lense?)
