the german? it's a locating pin type thing, they could have a big heavy armoured forehead piece mounted on it, when they were peeping out of the trenches, manning machine guns etc

It's called a "Stirnpanzer" and is a bit of a rarity. Produced as a sniper shield. Only available for about 5% of the standard helmets produced, it was extra armour for the frontal area of the helmet, and at 1.2kg, it more than doubled the weight of the helmet. As Hugo has said, often issued to sentries and machine gun crews, etc, in 'static' roles in the trenches. Not really suitable for use by advancing infantry due to the extra weight.
