Didn't really get a chance to take pics over Xmas but these were the best I managed and really made me wish I had a longer lense (250mm is not enough) as they're quite heavily cropped and nowhere near as good as i'd like frown

Indeed - some nice captures there Andrew especially considering they're straight from the camera smile

Quite so. Although that bloody Red Shank seems to be a bit of a poser .... wink . Gets in everywhere.

I also note that many of the subjects seem to be feigning sleep. You may want to reflect on that.

Of course I have no idea why they should feel unobliged to acknowledge the presence of a talented photographer .... unless they have already learned about lens envy.

"Ay oop Doris there's a bloke there snapping us. Want to do some poses?"

"Nay Archie, he's got one of them black lenses. You know we agreed to pose properly only for the people with the 'white' lenses and the hernias.'

Thankyou, kind Sirs, for your encouragement.
I find the sneaking up as satisfying as the pic.
Subject matter seems to be napping but they are really quite alert. This is typical of waders who kip at high tide because all their feeding grounds are covered with water, especially Redshanks! smile
There are some great pics on this thread. I like the Nuthatches as I never see them up here.
I'm sorry I haven't got the lenses to get in closer. I'll try for some different species instead.

As much as I love Tits, I wish a different bird would feed on the bloody nuts!

Do different species like different food?

Just bought a 2nd hand 400D with 300mm.
VERY gloomy this morning...

But since I had the time, I set up the camera on the tripod, and sat in the armchair with the portable - using the remote operation via the usb link, I fired the shutter when the bird was in the target area. With a bit more light, I could have frozen some of the movement better. My first attempt, this was at 1/60 f5.6

First time shooting birds other than in Singapore zoo in November when I bought the camera.

Was lucky they were very close to me and not bothered by our presence.

Very pleased for a first try smile

I see your 105mm and raise you 60mm! (okay 60mm on a crop body, so 96mm)

uncropped

Cropped (for effect, not to improve the photo)

Well done, good capture yes

Goes to show you don't always need a telephoto lens.

Ture but it does help! This fella was probably only a foot or so from the end of my lens. You woulnt get that close to anything other then a robin, or prehaps a duck! I went out for a play with my macro lens but couldnt resist snapping this guy as he was so tame, i reckon someone must have been feeding him for him to be so trusting.

I was thinking that about the Robin - friendly little fellas yes

Whenever I go and have a bonfire in the garden or muck about down the chicken shed, there's always one that seems to be hanging around really close.
