If it helps I upgraded from RX10iii to RX10iv and there is really very little difference unless you are doing birds in flight tracking autofocus type stuff - if you just use basic autofocus on static subjects you'd struggle to tell the difference
How is the mk iv for birds in flight btw? Apologies for slight thread hijack as I've always wondered if it was meaningfully (as in £400 quid ) better than the mk 3...DibblyDobbler said:
The MKiv is pretty decent at BIF - in all honesty at the time I did the upgrade I didn't really do BIF or similar and only used spot focus and I basically couldn't tell the difference between the iii and the iv! But I do sometimes do BIF now and I generally leave it in 'lock-on AF:expand flexible spot' and it works quickly and pretty well (although this is not something I am expert it). I guess it depends how much of this kind of thing you do - it'd be a marginal call for me to be honest
Cheers - very useful to know I'm in the same boat as the OP - have an old D5100 which gets used occasionally.
When I purchased it in 2010/11 camera phones were obviously not as good as they are today, so it had much more use.
Over the years as the perceived quality of smartphone cameras has become better, I have used the DSLR less and less - it seems cumbersome lugging it around now, as much as I love it.

Got this yesterday with the RX10iv (RX10iii result would have been near identical) - if interested click through to Flickr and zoom in to see the sharpness, also I think the bokeh is half decent (which is rare but shows it can be done!)

All your pics shown here Dibbly are quite special, hence why I am thinking of just getting the RV10 IV. Budgets are there to be broken aren't they.Robin with bokeh by Mike Smith, on Flickr
But stupidly and because of my reticence, I saw some reviews on this last night and in a spectacular thread twist:
Fujifilm X-T3 - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/fujifilm-x-t3/sk... or
Fujifilm X-T30 II - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/fujifilm-x-t30-i...
with
Fujifilm XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/fujifilm-xc-15-4... or
Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/fujifilm-xf-18-5...
with this:
Fujifilm XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS II - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/fujifilm-xc-50-2... or an equivalent Tamron long zoom (18-300) lens.
My thinking - the body is so much smaller, the reviews are terrific, and might trigger a more positive use of the equipment in the longer term. And they look cool too.
This whole process is more confusing than I anticipated. I looked back at some older posts and it seems I have been considering this for quite a period!!
I think I am going to the Fujifilm as I don't think I will regret not having that huge zoom.
Or will I? Arghhhh!!
as somebody who tried to downsize, dont do it!
The thing is even the Panasonic TZ / Sony RX100 compacts are too big to comfortaby pocket. Once you're past the point of everyday pocket carry it really doesnt matter how much glass/body you're carrying (within reason) you're carrying it in a bag.

Something like a RX100 or Ricoh is pocketable I'd have thought? ok it'll need a large pocket but just on the doable side - especially in a jacket pocket which tends to be larger. The thing is even the Panasonic TZ / Sony RX100 compacts are too big to comfortaby pocket. Saw a chap with a bridge/large compact attached to his belt. It was quick release, although, apparently, a bit fiddly to replace. He was under the impression it looked a bit cool.
hmmmmm - you didn't happen to clock the make of such a QR attachment? Be cool if it were a holster of some sort!! andburg said:

Are you confusing the RX10 with RX100?The thing is even the Panasonic TZ / Sony RX100 compacts are too big to comfortaby pocket. Once you're past the point of everyday pocket carry it really doesnt matter how much glass/body you're carrying (within reason) you're carrying it in a bag.
RX100 is easily pocketable, RX10 certainly isn't:

Probably one of these: https://spiderholster.com/I would have asked, but he would have been unbearably smug.
I find a sling shoulder strap makes carrying my RX10 a lot more comfortable than a normal neck strap.
Something like this:

Camera hangs upside down.

No I meant what i said.40mm is rather thick, its like having 5 iphones back to back. Its a neccesity of the glass and mechanisms needed for the telescopic lenses.
It will fit in a jacket pocket but for me it was never comfortable so my TZ ended up in the wife's handbag then on a belt clip which made it even bulkier before going back to her handbag.

Fair enough, I must have bigger pockets 40mm is rather thick, its like having 5 iphones back to back. Its a neccesity of the glass and mechanisms needed for the telescopic lenses.
