Lots of people are saying that the dog picture is poor and he should be taking the picture lying down etc. - this is utter rubbish! Ask yourself what is the point of the picture - Answer to get a picture of the dog sitting in the snow. If you want to give advice on how to make the picture better you need to think why its taken first, if theres a specific subject then its how best to capture that. Otherwise its like advising a picture of a TVR would be better if it was a picture of a Ferrari.

No, we're not suggesting he changes the breed of dog, just that he tries a lower angle or something more intimate. A white screen with a dog-shaped splodge in the middle is not a photo!

The comment I remember reading a while ago about taking photographs of pets is that if the image is taken from above, it gives an air of domination to it (ooh err).

By which I mean that, whether it's meant or not, the picture gives the impression of the photographer looking down on the (inferior) subject.

Taking it from the same level or below doesn't make the same inferences.

I thought the point of the piccy was showing how deep his paws are in the snow

Ah. Didn't notice! Funny how different people look for different things!

Mind you, a lower shot showing nothing below the knees (IYKWIM) would also make the point. Whatever, as long as the photographer is happy, that's the main thing!

Unfortunatley, As a newcomer to photography myself, my only disappointment is that I cannot offer more technical help, as I also am learning about shutter speeds, aperture, etc, etc (trial & error).

Keywords: Newcomer. He thinks they are crap but doesnt know why? Suggests that his work will not even be comparable in standard.

I hate know-it-alls

Oh Rick, accept the guy's humility. He's entitled to an opinion too. It's just that at present he's not got the flying hours to suggest how to make things better.

Don;t quite understand how I could be classed as a 'know-it-all' when I clearly stated that I don't know that much about technicalities of photogrpahy.

However, that doesn't mean that I don't know a good photograph when I see one, and vice versa.
