Indeed. I live near Duxford and often walk my dogs on a farm a mile or so away. That too was a wartime aerodrome.

There is a small airfield there today but even so it is difficult to imagine.
Ah, Fowlmere. I used to cycle up that way too. Past a windmill somewhere, and down a road with an avenue of trees down both sides. Damned if I can remember the names of those places, but Fowlmere and Duxford stick in the mind. Pain in the backside to get from the Duxford side over to the Fowlmere side on a bicycle, though. All the "straight over" crossroads have been altered so that you had to turn right onto the main road and then left off it. Even a few hundred yards on that road (A505?) were like taking your life in your hands. Nuthampstead, Little Walden, Castle Camps, Ridgefield, Gosfield, Wratting Common and Sawbridgeworth were some of the airfields I remember cycling between after work when I was stationed at RAF Debden (Carver Barracks). So much RAF/USAAF history crammed into such a relatively small area, I loved my 7 years there.
For those who like this sort or thing, here's an interactive map of UK airfields past and present.

Didn't the ship owners claim salvage?

According to Wikipedia the aircraft was salvageable and the ship's owners got £570k compensation. I am not sure if the salvageable status and compensation are related though. Ian was put on desk duty for some time before returning to the air.
