February 2009 photo comp - chatter
Discussion
I doubt that any of these stand much chance, given the quality of entries so far, but can someone help me decide between these three?
1. Phenia (taken in 1979; scanned from a slide)
2. Josie (1980; scanned)
3. Liam (2008; digital)
And if you feel like ripping into them, stiggy, feel free. I've tended to shy away from portraiture in the past, so any pointers would be helpful.

Sorry to ask, but have I missed a trick here :scratchhead:
Since when has the judge been able to give advice to posters throughout the month or is the aim to post as many photo's as you can, read Stig's comments and then post the one he really likes...
Seems to be a bit arse about face to me TBH...

To be fair, when was the last time we had 5 pages of photo's and chat on a competition thread? And it's not even halfway through the month yet.Since when has the judge been able to give advice to posters throughout the month or is the aim to post as many photo's as you can, read Stig's comments and then post the one he really likes...

While it's not something I wanted to do when I judged I don't see a problem with it to be honest.

not more controversy please!
Let me start by confirming I'm not trying to be controversial or start an argument I understand other posters giving advice, but not the judge as you have an obligation to be impartial at this stage surely?
Edited to add, if you refer to your comments re Major Bloodnok's three photo's, he may have thought for example the second or third picture captured the moment and was the one for this month. However now that is not the case and the judge has offered advice and a suggested already which one is preferred which totally defeats the object of a competition where the entries are judged once the competition has finished.
Seems odd that's all.....

I wasn't asking for sf's opinion on which he thought best, it's just that I've been very impressed by his portrait photography and sought an opinion in an area in which I feel that I'm quite weak. I thought I was being careful in asking stiggy to "rip into" them, rather than express a preference for exactly the reason you give. I just wanted to know where I could do better in future. Quite honestly, I don't think I stand much chance against the quality here so far, anyway.
My initial request to help me decide was a general one, because I really don't know which I prefer, and there are a lot of fine photographers on here, all of whose opinions I respect. Yesterday, I thought the first one, probably because I'd just been working on it. Today, I think the third one (or maybe the second - but, then again, I'm actually starting to like the fig seller a bit more, but does that count as "portrait"?). So, help me out; which, if any, do you think I should enter?
When it comes down to it, we all want to improve, so we'll all take our opportunities to aid that improvement when they come.

I wasn't by any means criticising you or your post, simply using it and his answer as an example....sorry if I didn't imply that My initial request to help me decide was a general one, because I really don't know which I prefer, and there are a lot of fine photographers on here, all of whose opinions I respect. Thinking on it, though, I don't think that it is much of a problem, anyway. After all, it's all out in the open. Also, any advice that stigmund does give only pertains to one person - they still have to compete against all the others.
