The subject is WINTER

Rules as per usual: but with a new rule regarding results/next competition.

The photos taken must be your own work and can be taken at anytime, but please do get out with your gear if you have safe opportunity etc.

The competition will run from the first to the last day of the month.

You can only submit one, and only one photo.

The winner from the previous month decides on the topic for the following month and judges it at the end of the month.

If the judge fails to pick a winner after 3 days any winner in the last 12 months may pick a winner and, if the winner does not pick a subject within the next 48 hours, will also set the next months subject.

The winner should update the Photography Competition Photo Challenge Wiki

Entries and discussion on this single thread please.

All entrants acknowledge that they may indeed win and that their adherence to convention ensures everyone else's continued fun.

Thanks for setting the new competition. I should have a few options in my archive, but will wait until the end of the month and see if I can get out with the camera.

Exactly 10 years ago (as recently discussed on the abortive December 22 competition) the subject was "Travel"

Look chap, it's supposed to be a just for fun competition. Nobody appointed me, as you well know [cba quoting the Dec 22 thread]. Would you rather be the judge? I don't mind if you'd rather. The point is that 1/3 of January has gone and there was no competition up and - it seemed to me - that everyone was stymied by ensuring nobody's nose was put out of joint.

'Winter' seemed a subject that might attract more entries than the likes of opposing colours...

So If you'd like to be the judge, just say so. I will gladly yield the 'crown' to you or anyone else who wants to judge. I should (maybe will) add another rule that anyone who fails to judge in the allotted time will be barred from future entries?

How about - if the setter/judge vanishes, the entrants of that competition vote (not for their own entry of course)? Unlike a normal open poll it would stop people getting their mates to vote and skew the result.

My suggestion in the previous thread was meant to be fair and practical. To round it out, and create something practical and avoiding the need for contentious discussion, I would suggest an update to the rule set from next month as below:

- (existing rules) The winner sets the next month and judges it.
- If the judging has not been posted by the (GMT) end of the 10th day of the following month then the "new month" topic will be automatically set to that from 10 years prior (and posted up by anyone from the community).
- The judging of the "previous month" will be put on hold for the OP to pick up when they are back online.
- The judging of the new month will be the winner of the previous month if they are chosen in time, and if not the winner from the month prior to that will step back in and judge.

This seems fair and pretty straightforward.
Only suggestion from me would be rather than waiting until the 10th day, maybe the new topic gets set at the end of the 5th day. Most previous months have been judged quickly, and pretty much all (bar this latest incidence) within 5 days - especially when the judge has been sent a PM as a reminder.
This then gives more time for people to come up with entries?

Going with a recent image. It's more processed than I normally produce, but the Black Forest vibes appealed at the time.
