I'm using a D200 and a D70s at the moment, but the taxman has just given me some money
so I'm trying desperately to resist the temptation to get a D2Xs.
It's not really going to be all that much better than a D200, is it? I was talking to an old boy on Saturday who uses both, and he says the D2Xs is a lot better than the D200. Anyone used both and can verify that?

I know I "helped" last time with the D70 to D200 arm bending, so let me wade in again... the D2Xs is brilliant.
I used a D100 and got bored of waiting for Nikon to release the D200, got a super price on a D2X (before the D2Xs release) and bought it. I guess I'm impatient
I love it to bits, just feels so right in my hands.
It's built like a brick privvy and will take all the abuse I'm likely to give out for a good number of years. AF is super quick, metering great, motor drive fast enough, high speed crop mode more useful than you would at first think, massive battery life and the resolution comes out at over A4 size straight out of the camera.
However on the down side is it really that much of an improvement over a D200?? Not sure about this, you'll really need to play with one and see if it suits you. Also bear in mind it's way heavier than a D200 which mounts up during a day out.
On the flip side, I love mine and can't see myself changing to anything in the next few years.

I have had the D2X since release and shot c30,000 images in that time. I regard it as a highly reliable tool. Above there is a suggestion a new model will be on its way with that in mind perhaps consider purchasing a 2nd hand D2X and install the firmware updates which virtually take it to the same spec as the D2Xs

Can't comment on the new D2Xs but we replaced our 2 D2X's with D200's in our wedding business as we found they were so much better. I haven't checked the full specs but would assume the new D2Xs will incorporate the D200 techonologies and then some.
I doubt it will be massively noticeable when comparing the D200 to the D2Xs. The D200 is such a good camera. People always make the assumption that if you have the top camera you will automatically take better pictures!
If you don't yet have the best lenses then I would suggest you would be better off spending your money there. After all you could have the world's best brain but if your eyesight is bad you're never going to see the best quality image.

Thanks everybody, some good advice there! I like the idea of waiting to see what Nikon is going to come up with next - I've only had the D200 five minutes so I suppose I should explore that one a bit more first. The idea of buying some nice lenses is quite appealing, too...
Has anyone tried the 18-200mm VR lens? Is it as good as people say it is?

Personally I don't like the idea of the 18-200. VR is great but it can't help you with moving subjects in low light, which at f/5.6 you will struggle with. I guess it depends what you are shooting most of the time.
I think either the 17-55 f/2.8 or the 28-70 f/2.8 are a better buy, albeit also a lot more money.

Personally I am not a big fan of these lenses that cover such a wide focal range thinking them to be more a jack of all trades - master of none.
I have three lenses that cover the same focal range (17-35, 24-70, 70-200, these are Canon as this is my preferred personal system). Of course prime lenses offer the best quality but in the real consumer world they are of course not that practical.
Kind of boils down to what you want to take photographs of and how you go about taking them. Photography is an incredibly personal choice which is why there are so many options.
If image quality is everything to you then I would suggest you look at other lens options and combinations however if travelling light, compact and convenient is your style then it must tick many more boxes compared to lugging the three Canon L lenses I do!
You could have a look at dpreview.com and do a search for that lens - I'm sure there will be plenty of posts, comments, opinions etc and I guarantee all will be different!
Cheers

Another vote for buying glass - I got a 70-200/2.8VR recently and its awesome! Its as sharp as my 85/1.8, has no purple fringing/CA, beautiful bokeh and nice contrast. Plus the VR and build quality is great. Its best not to handle one unless you are prepared to buy it though - I think I lasted 1/2 hr :-)
