Zoom comparison
Discussion
For my own reference, I thought I'd do a quick zoom comparison chart as I sometimes find it hard to visualise just what a particular lens will do for me in the field without putting it on.
The pictures are rubbish (camera left on auto and wiggly tripod on windy day) but certainly give an idea.
I was quite surprised at the detail resolved at 400mm...

Yep, spot on.
I've never looked *that* closely at a 400 image before but the whole rig was definitely moving as the pics were taken. The tripod and head are flimsy and the camera was screwed to the tripod rather than using the lens ring which is what I would usually do for better balance.
I did this as a zoom comparison rather than a lens test but having seen the results, I'm hoping to get some time this week to check the lens itself. Hopefully it'll prove to be fine....
