On my S3 it is real wood veneer with clearcoat.
I bought it like this , don't know if it is original factory fitment
The doorstrips were some kind of paperprint with lacquer.
I had the doorstrips and tunnel bit reworked with wood veneer by :

The dash is still in good nick

My S3c is a 1991 J plate, and it had the painted walnut dash. I replaced this myself with burr walnut.
Its quite simple to do, and I was really pleased with the results. The best advise I can offer is don't use yacht varnish its next to impossible to not have brush marks. I had to refinish then spray clear gloss lacquer.
This after removal from clamps and cutting out holes with craft knife.
Finished product prior to installation
Completed installation

I believe most were painted, but some were wood. I think it depended on how flush TVR were at the time. When my original painted dash peeled, I managed to find a lady in Somerset who could paint it again, however the cost was the same as getting it veneered. I got it veneered by a company in Cheshire (ex-Rolls Royce)

...funnily enough, my S3C had a wood veneered dash...problem was that after 20 years in the sun it was peeling. Managed to only need to replace the lower panel (easier) with vinyl, and ignore the minor edge curls on the upper panel.I believe most were painted, but some were wood. I suppose all types suffer from long term sunlight uv, so i could make it last longer by keeping the roof on..............NOT!!!!

In my recent acquisition they have been stripped to bare metal so I'm considering my options
Mike, as you know I been through the same thought process recently.Surely with your reputation there is only one option - stainless! My replacement in brushed aluminiumumum is being fitted at the moment and judging from the photo I've seen it looks
