it tells the ECU to stop fuelling, and close the ISCV to give maximum engine braking on deceleration; then to reopen the ISCV before the car reaches standstill to give a smooth transition to idle. I believe this function may well be implemented on our cars (in theory, and if it works!).
Yes, I believe it is implemented (some how) and does work.

I stand well and truly corrected. It's a long time since I looked into such things, but yes, the ECU does get the VSS signal and in the post below it caused symptoms fairly similar to the OP's:

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have cleaned everything, MAFS, throttle body, butterflies, linkages, idle control, and throttle position sensor, hopefully the photo has uploaded but in the process of all the cleaning found that the vacuume pipe plastic elbow into the rocker cover was split. Had a spare one so fitted and a quick spin round the block and seems ok, test drive tomorrow in the day and hopefully fixed (fingers crossed)

That's good to know Graham, it would certainly produce your symptoms.
Fingers crossed the problem is now sorted and you can enjoy your S.

Good to talk you yesterday at Tatton Show, hope to see you at some of our events. driving

Thanks glen, good to chat to you too got stuck straight into the S when I got home after the show, must have been inspired 😃
Just about to message Alan for details on the throttle linkage upgrade. I have got a spare so no problem sending it in.
Thanks again for all the info yesterday.
